As an artist and a designer, I have always had this dream of being self employed and working in my own studio. I have been a avid flea marketer, thrift store shopper and treasure hunter almost my entire life. I have a bachelors degree in commercial art / graphic design which includes a background in sewing, photography, and textile/fashion design.
I started on Etsy selling dresses from my life long vintage collection. I took all of my own photos, did all of my editing, wrote up all my descriptions and watched nervously and excitedly for my first item to sell. I sold vintage items and antiques for a few months. I had no savings, no start up money, no financial help, but I had a Nikon camera, raw talent, and I had ideas and lots of motivation to succeed.
Sometime in July of 2010, I was in a local costume shop, looking at tiger ears on a headband and I suddenly remembered that I had a whole suitcase of handmade costumes that I designed for that preschool play. I called the preschool director and asked if I could borrow the costumes that I had made the year before and photograph them to see if there was a market for my handmade animal costumes. My daughter was 4 at the time and she became my first model. I literally went out to the backyard and started taking photos and telling her how to pose. She thought we were playing dress up and gladly went along with the photo shoots.
The handmade costumes were a big hit. Every time that I sold a costume, I took the money and was able to buy more fabric and more supplies to make new designs. Customers started requesting custom orders and I pushed myself from beginner level to intermediate, and advanced sewing techniques. I made it through three holiday seasons, each getting bigger, better, and more elaborate. I felt like with a single pair of scissors, a simple sewing machine, a little ingenuity, and much prayer, I could rise to the top.
Now, when I look back to my humble beginnings and how far I have come since those early costume making days, I know that God was with me all the way. I finally was fulfilling my life dream and giving it my all. I have made over fifty different animal costumes, and I make all of my own patterns and designs.
I am currently working alongside my husband in a ministry that helps children and youth who are living in the inner city ghettos of Philadelphia PA. All profits from my costume business help us to thrive so that we can be available 3 days a week as volunteers to help run the inner city ministry and I can sew costumes the remaining 4 days a week.
