Time for an encore (career, that is)

Hi there and thanks for stopping by.

I am a long-time frustrated artist who quit a decades long career in an unrelated field a few years ago in order to pursue my creative passions full time.

I've been an occupational therapist and a health outcomes researcher. Go ahead, PubMed search for "AM Shea"... and the next time you’re having trouble sleeping? "Resource use and costs of branch and central retinal vein occlusion in the elderly." You’re welcome.

I plugged away for years on end, got married, had kids, and got to expend a little bit of that pent up creative energy renovating a house or two. I got swept up in the whole renovation/home decor thing because it's what I was doing at the time, out of necessity. There were first houses to decorate, nurseries to plan, and "big boy" rooms to create. There were homes with previous owners whose tastes differed wildly from my own, and financial stresses that necessitated magic to be made on the tightest of budgets. And I really did love it, because I was good at it and it was my only creative outlet for a long, long while.

But in the summer of 2013, I found Instagram and everything changed. Instagram became my virtual sketchbook; and over time, my growing feed became a true catalogue of my creative point of view. I was giddy. It was like a part of me--a very integral part of me--was reawakened after decades of deep, deep sleep. And I was inspired to do more.

So I enrolled in classes. Specifically, I signed up for watercolor classes… almost entirely because watercolor scares the crap out of me. I'm a control freak. In my much younger days, I worked in pencil (colored and graphite) because it allowed me total control over my medium. To me, watercolor seemed so unpredictable. Uncontrollable. But Instagram had given me such creative confidence that now all I wanted to do was CONQUER it. I wanted to take on the thing that scared me most and make it MINE.

It's been four years since I started my relationship with watercolor, and I am totally smitten. I love everything about it. I love its quirky unpredictability, and how full of pride I feel when I still manage produce outcomes that meet, or even exceed, my own expectations. I love the twinge of anxiety I feel every time I put down a color--especially staining ones--knowing that I've often only got one shot to get it right. I love getting out a fresh sheet of that seemingly million dollar 300 pound cold pressed paper and feeling like, "This paper cost so much money. I CANNOT screw this up." Nothing like a little pressure.

Watercolor still terrifies me, but in the most delicious way. It's an overachieving, perfectionist, control-freak's dream, providing just enough of a challenge to make the whole process a tension-filled whirlwind of creative excitement. I start painting first thing in the morning, and the next thing I know it's mid afternoon. Hours have gone by, but to me, no time has passed. My anxieties about everyday bullshit simply fade away and I'm transported to a place where nothing else matters but light and shadow and color… and it is SO. GOOD.

So that's where I'm at right now. Welcome to my encore.

Frequently asked questions

Sizing details

FOR PHOTOGRAPHS: Can you print this photo larger?

In most cases--NO, I can't. I shoot with a very low res camera, and the photo prints I list in my shop are generally the largest I can make without using special software or having the image appear pixelated. I also print my own work from home on a professional Cannon printer; the largest dimensions I can print are 13x19. I may or may not have paper that large in stock at any given time.

I *do* have special photo editing software that allows me to enlarge pictures beyond their native pixel dimensions. I don't love it, but I'm also an anal freak. If there's something you simply LOVE and MUST have larger, let me know and we can run a test print or two to see if I can accommodate.

FOR WATERCOLOR PRINTS: Can you print a different size?

First, check my listings, because I often have several sizes of the same print listed separately. If the size you need doesn't seem to be available, shoot me a message with your specific request and I'll let you know if I can accommodate.
