Announcement   Ask A Marmot's handmade shelves, small wood animals and other creations are inspired by nature--perfect gifts for creative adults and older children who love creatures and natural materials, small things, the Waldorf style, little containers with tiny things in them, and objects that make you laugh. The delicate and often tiny designs in the shop are not intended for small children. The shelves in this shop are perfect for displaying the creatures and other small treasures.

And--check out this review: http://www.goteamkate.com/products-we-love/askamarmot!!

Although I opened the shop in 2010, I am only now adding items.... just so you know. Maybe being the tortoise rather than the hare is okay. Hey. I should make some animals from Aesop's fables! Useful things (as opposed to useful creatures) are included in a section of the shop--trivets, birthday candle holders, and other unusual finds.

Also--I recently found out that New Zealand and Australia have some restrictions on importing two of the things used in my products--wood and bee products. For any orders from NZ and Australia, I will always use Baltic birch plywood (treated so not a bug-threat) and carnuba wax (so no effect on the local bee population), so that the products can be imported.

So tiny! Can't believe we are able to fulfill the kids request for teeny tiny wooden creatures she can hide from the old adults. (She's very keen on proving how sharp her eyes are.) Well made, well packaged, shipped quickly. Thank you!

About

The world would be a better place if everyone took time to create -- honest, it would.

Creativity feeds the soul, and I'm hoping that some of the creations in this shop will help to feed your soul, or at perhaps make you laugh. Endeavors into wood have collided with a fascination with the natural world, resulting in a small universe widely inhabited by tiny creatures of all types, and places to display them. These creatures are not meant for small children--many of them are delicately detailed, and all are too small for young children.

A friend who is a graphic artist (see banner above, and contact me if you'd like him to do some work for you) uses these around his desk along with other objects as (his words) "playthings for the creative." These are perfect for adult fans of the Waldorf movement and creatives of all stripes.

Using wood to create is an inspiration in itself. The materials are primarily reused, reclaimed, or small bits left over from other projects. Many objects are made of the best grade of Baltic birch available, which I do purchase, as I have found that hardwoods won't take the detail of most of my creatures-- and I hate having legs and antlers break off. The non-toxic materials and finishes fit with the nature of wood. I discovered and use a great finishing technique from a book by the 18th century master woodworker Roubo using a handmade tool that helps to drive beeswax into the grain of the wood. To find out more about this method, please send me an email or look around on the internet.

As to the process of making creatures: using multiple sources including photographs and books, I sketch until I'm satisfied with the design, scan in the final, then cut objects out of wood. I have quite a zoo now , along with a village of boxes, shelves, and natural objects.

I hope you enjoy these objects as much as I do.

Shipping
Ships to locations within the U.S. using first class mail/USPS, which typically takes 2-3 days for the continental US. If you need something more quickly, let me know and I'll try to help out.

Please note that I use recycled packing materials whenever possible, in the spirit of sustainable living. If you prefer new packaging, please let me know right away; otherwise, I may have already shipped it!

For orders to be shipped outside of the U.S. please note shipping estimates are a kind of best hypothesis, as customs delays are unpredictable. Items are packed carefully, and are shipped quickly. If you need something overnight or extras such as shipping insurance please let me know. I'll be happy to help.

If you receive a damaged package please email me the photos immediately upon receipt of the package. I will make every effort to either recreate your damaged sculpture or provide you with a full refund.

I will contact you promptly if an order for a natural wood item is to be shipped to Australia or New Zealand, to work out next steps.
