About

the temple of art

In 2003 Dad dropped us off at Manningtree Station in England with a few suitcases, a laptop and a small amount of savings. We took the train to Harwich port where we crossed the North Sea to the Netherlands and made a new home and business for ourselves in a little harbour town (that often reminds me of that French village in the film Chocolat) about half way between Antwerp and Rotterdam. A lot has happened since then.

From the beginning we've had three core interests: making and creating, giving art classes and making artwork in commission. Over the years a small community of people have grown around our art centre in the heart of this small town where our main aim is to share in creativity. Our studio and workshop is shared with all those who wish to learn how to paint or make etchings. And on Saturdays we open the studio to the participants of our classes during the week to continue their work, along with a cup of tea or coffee and homemade cake. The best part is watching people from 8 to 80 years old painting, learning, struggling and discovering along side each other. One participant once referred to the art centre as 'the temple of art'.

In the summer months we visit art markets with our etching press and demonstrate how etchings are made. We even can be found dressed up in the local traditional costume, including wooden clogs!

When we're not working in our studio we love to cycle along the Dutch coast amongst the dunes and enjoy the sea views, all year round, drawing on the special light and atmosphere for inspiration.

Why 28? 28 seems like a special magic number for us, connected to our birthdays, but also as a symbol: 2 = to, 8 = infinity...where anything is possible. Plus it has a good rhythm when spoken in Dutch...also important.

I'm from the UK and studied architecture at the University of Sheffield. Since 2003 I’ve been working as a professional artist in the Netherlands. My favourite place to be (apart from behind a canvas with a paint brush) is by the beach and sea.
