Expressing warmth & playfulness

Founding director, Shinji Naoi studied textile design in Tokyo and graduated in 1967. After graduating, he traveled throughout Asia and Europe to research art, which encouraged him to pursue jewelry making, following his family tradition.

Shinji met Matico in Paris, and they have been working together creating original jewelry since 1972. Upon returning to Tokyo in 1977, Shinji and Matico became successful through their own shops in department stores throughout Japan. They design style became recognised internationally through Premiere Classe in Paris, which they exhibited at for over 10 years. In 1998 Shinji and Matico opened "Atelier Shinji", their very first flagship store in Aoyama, Tokyo. In 2005, the flagship store and atelier was merged and relocated to their current location, Ginza Tokyo.

Ippei, the son of Shinji & Matico was born in Tokyo, and grew up surrounded by jewelry and design. After graduating from Sophia University, he lived in Amsterdam for six years where he worked as a web designer, continuing on to become a photographer.

Janine Vleugel Naoi was born in Melbourne, Australia. She graduated from Melbourne’s Swinburne National School of Design, and after working in a design agency in Melbourne, she moved to Amsterdam where she spent three years as a graphic designer in international advertising agency, TBWA.

In 2006, Ippei & Janine moved to Tokyo, where they became active in jewelry design, both drawing inspiration from their varied creative backgrounds.

Atelier Shinji Ginza has three lines - “Shinji”, which focusses on seasonal and traditional Japanese motifs; “Amamika”, focussing on contemporary design inspired by the details of everyday life; and “Shinji Classic”, timeless Japanese nature motifs inspired by classic Art Nouveau styles.

As a family business, a personal and high quality craftsmanship approach is insisted upon, and each piece of jewelry is designed, cast, finished and sold within the Atelier Shinji Ginza workshop/store. This allows complete freedom, resulting in unique handmade design which is not influenced by fleeting trends, and not bound by the rules of conventional jewelry making.

Frequently asked questions
How can I take care of the pieces?

Although an anti-oxidising coating has been applied to the surface of all pieces, the colour may change slightly from exposure to the air. To clean yourself, we recommend silver-cleaning liquid from a reputable brand such as Hagarty (available online).

We provide a zip-lock bag with all pieces. When your silver pieces are not being worn, we strongly recommend that you store them in these bags. This will reduce the exposure to the air, retaining the clean silver colour for longer.

Cleaning of Atelier Shinji Ginza pieces is offered free of charge at the Ginza flagship store (if you are in the area!).

How are your pieces packaging? Do you offer gift packaging?

Our pieces are shipped either in a plain, hard white box, or in our signature dark green gift box. We have a small charge for our gift box, which comes together with our branded cotton bag :)

I'd love to see more of your pieces in person. Do you have a physical store?

Our store and workshop/atelier is in the Ginza district of Tokyo, Japan.

Our address is:
5-13-11 Ginza Chuo-ku 104-0061 Tokyo Japan

What if I have a metal allergy?

For most of our pieces, we use high purity silver (Britannia Silver 958, which contains less impurities than Sterling Silver) and we don't use nickel in the mix, nor rhodium plating which usually contains nickel. Because of this reason, we have many customers from around the world with allergies who are wearing our pieces without a problem. There are, however, rare cases of people who are allergic to all sorts of metals, even from holding a Chinese metal wok or from a zipper touching the skin.

Rhodium plating is the main culprit for most skin irritations, because nickel is usually part of the plating process. We cherish the pure natural and genuine look of high purity silver, and our pieces do not trigger usual metal allergies.

How long will it take for shipping?

We offer complimentary shipping through Japan Post which is registered & traceable. Delivery takes 1-2 weeks depending on the destination.
Lately there have been lengthy delays, especially in Canada (EMS only), Australia & Europe due to increased border security.

For express delivery, shipping upgrades are available for each item. You can choose EMS international express courier service (also registered and traceable) for 2,000 yen. Delivery takes 2-6 days depending on the destination.

Every effort is made to help you to avoid import tax, however please be aware that import duties may apply in your country. We are not responsible for customs fees, or any delays at customs.

To avoid delay, please supply us with your phone number.

How long will it take to make?

For pieces which we have in stock, packages are generally dispatched 1-4 days after receipt of payment. If you would like to know if an item is immediately available before you purchase, please contact us directly first.

As we make our pieces one by one and we have a physical shop where the piece can be sold at any time, there is a chance that we are out of stock of your ordered item. Britannia Silver 958 pieces generally take 1-2 weeks to make, while 23K Gold Vermeil pieces take 2-4 weeks. It is worth bearing this in mind if purchasing jewelry as a gift. In the event that an item is out-of-stock, we will contact you directly.

Canada, Italy, Germany -- Why do you guys have to pay for shipping?

Due to increased border security in Canada and some parts of Europe, our standard shipping packages haven't been arriving.
That's pretty sad :(
We want to make it right with you guys, so we will pay for part of the shipping, but we have to send packages with EMS.
