Raw, organic, industrial artifact jewelry designs inspired by Warrior Women throughout history. Herbal concoctions drawn from wise women past. Jewelry & herbs to protect and empower you.

Chain Maille consists of small metal rings linked together to form a kind of mesh fabric. All of the chain maille in my shop starts out as wire which I then coil around a mandrel, cut to make jump rings, and then weave using historical methods into the chain maille patterns and designs you see here. A simple bracelet can have hundreds of rings in it and can easily take an hour or more to weave whereas a piece of armour will have thousands of rings and can take a couple of weeks to weave.

Please scroll down for shop policies as well as information on chain maille, the tools used to make it, and the different metals that are featured in my shop.

Herbs and Jewelry: Protecting You Inside and Out

Hi, my name is Janine and I’m the maillesmith and herbalist of Athena’s Armoury & Apothecary. I am committed to providing tools for fiercely independent, strong women to protect themselves and their loved ones inside and out with armor and herbs. Draw on the strength and courage of warrior women from the past by wearing chain maille jewelry inspired by the armor that they wore into battle. Strengthen, protect, and heal with the wisdom of plants from the wisewomen throughout history.

Armour & Metal

I’ve always had an interest in the medieval and renaissance time periods (they were always my favorite museum exhibits) and have also always enjoyed working with my hands. When I discovered a tutorial to make a Euro 4-1 bracelet, I knew I had to try it. Euro (short for European) 4-1 is the the classic chain maille weave used for armor. It took me three hours to make that first bracelet, but I was hooked. Needless to say, the same bracelet now takes me less than five minutes to weave and I pride myself on my attention to detail, ensuring perfect closures.

Athena’s Armoury was founded back in 2007 after I learned that very first chain maille weave. It wasn’t long until I decided to work on my first large scale chain maille project. I wanted to make something historically correct, so I decided on a coif (armor covering for the head, neck, shoulders, chest). Athena’s Armoury continued to grow (I’m entirely self taught) with many different weaves and projects ranging from jewelry to bags to armor.

Also back in 2007, I took a metalsmithing course at a local fine arts center and found another love for working with metal: manipulating metal with my hands and tools by soldering, fold forming, riveting, sawing, drilling, polishing…. I love working with raw materials like copper and sterling silver to create raw, organic, industrial looking artifacts that can be from another time and place.

In 2012, I added another skill to my arsenal when I learned how to torch fire powdered glass enamel onto metal from Barbara Lewis. Torch fire and metal? Sign me up! I’ve played with beading for the love of gemstones: I’m fascinated by the color, meaning, and healing properties of the stones. One day, I hope to take courses in blacksmithing and welding, too.

Herbs

I have always been fascinated by the healing properties of herbs. In 2009, I decided to really advance my learning by becoming a student of Rosemary Gladstar’s The Science and Art of Herbalism. My herbal practice isn’t just culinary and medicinal, I’ve also spent time gardening, experimenting with herbal infused liquors, making scrumptious bath/body/cosmetic formulations, household cleaners, herbal beads and other crafts, and even soap making.

Me

I am a New Yorker who has also lived as a beach bum in Florida for ten years before moving to my current home in Portland, OR. I studied theatrical directing at NYU and spent a decade touring as a stage manager for Broadway shows. When not working in theater, making jewelry, or some form of herbal goodness, I enjoy lifting weights, exploring my city, spending time outside, cooking fresh healthy meals and desserts, playing with my DSLR camera, reading, watching movies, enjoying craft beer, as well as designing and building WordPress websites. Some of my heroes include Wonder Woman, Joan of Arc, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Rosie the Riveter, Rosemary Gladstar, and so many other Warrior Women.

Athena’s Armoury & Apothecary: What’s in a Name?

Many people know of Athena as a goddess of war and wisdom. What many people don’t know is that she’s also the patroness of crafts; among them, metal-working: seemed like a good fit for my shop.

So far as the armoury part of the shop name goes: well, let’s face it, chain maille is armour. Whether it be combat or costume armour or jewelry made using the same weaves, it’s all still based on the armour of long ago.

And adding the apothecary part was only a natural extension, when the time came.

One of the reasons that I love metal working, chain maille, and herbalism so much is because they are an immersion in art and history.

Additional policies and FAQs
*Care Instructions for your Chain Maille*
In general, just use good old common sense: it is a good rule of thumb not wear your jewelry in any wet or strenuous activity like in the pool, at the beach, in the shower, dish washing, surfing, boxing, working out, gardening, etc. Also, do not expose it to any harsh chemicals.

It is only natural for oxidation to occur in all metals. Generally, a soft Polish Cloth can buff the surface back to a lovely shine or a simple wash in soapy hot water works well for some pieces. Be sure not to scrub any stones or oxidized metals. When not being worn, it is best to store jewelry in an airtight container to preserve it's finish. Please do not use jewelry cleaner as many can be too harsh. There is more detailed information below, but if you have any questions about cleaning your pieces never hesitate to just ask!

*Antiqued Jewelry*
Some of the jewelry in the shop has been treating with a liver of sulfur patina and covered with a wax finish or spray to seal it in. Over time, the wax will wear off and the patina may change. Any finish will eventually wear off with time, it's just the way it works. The metal evolves in hue and color and will react differently to each person based on the amount of wear, sweat, and their own individual body chemistry.

*Care and Info for Specific Metals*
I make nearly all of my chain maille jewelry using non-precious metals to help keep prices low for my customers, but not at the expense of the piece.

Bright aluminum is just as shiny as sterling silver and is commonly mistaken for it; plus it's only 1/3 the weight of steel. It is also highly tarnish resistant. If it dulls, all you have to do is wash it with hot, soapy water to get the original shine back. Please note that there occasionally a rare instance where bright aluminum reacts with the chemicals in your skin and might stain it (similar to copper turning skin green).

Copper is another favorite metal of mine. There's a bit more weight to it than bright aluminum and has such a beautiful warm glow. Many people ask if copper will turn their skin green. Copper oxidizes by darkening and then turning green, just as sterling does so by tarnishing and iron does so by rusting. Exposed copper will darken and oxidize naturally to a beautiful warm chocolate brown. A polishing cloth will return a shine. Oxidation is a natural process and the environment determines how quickly it happens. It happens faster in high humidity, but the speed of oxidation is also affected by the body chemistry of different people. Some people wear copper every day and it never turns green and some people wear it and it turns in one day. Some people can turn sterling dark in one day, too. We're all different in that way. If you are concerned about copper greening your skin, you can apply jeweler's Skin Guard (available in brush on form from Amazon) to the inside of ring bands or ear wires. When copper oxidizes, all you have to do is rinse it around in some lemon juice with a pinch of salt to get it super bright and shiny again. In order to neutralize the acid of the lemon juice, mix a pinch of baking soda with some water, and with an old toothbrush lightly scrub the piece in circular motions, then rinse with water. You can also use soap and water to remove any remaining lemon juice, but I highly recommend the baking soda solution.

Stainless steel is also known as corrosion resistant steel because it does not corrode or rust as easily as steel. It is extremely strong and has a nice weight to it. Stainless steel is a nice shiny, yet dark silver color.

*Custom Orders*
Are certainly welcome, but I can only accept a limited number of custom orders at a time. Please message me with your idea! Once we come to terms with the details of the project, a 50% deposit on the commissioned work will be required via a custom listing link on Etsy before any work begins. The time frame for completion is entirely dependent on the project and is dependent on both the acquisition of any materials as well as the actual creation. Once complete and/or at various stages of construction, I'll send you digital photos for your approval. A final reserved Etsy listing will be created for the remainder of payment and shipping costs.

*Guarantee*
All of my chain maille comes with a lifetime guarantee. If with normal wear, your chain maille is damaged, I will repair it for only the cost of shipping. Please note: I will know if it is not normal wear. A friend of mine had a customer return a chain maille shirt for repair saying it wasn't bulletproof (yes, they shot it with a gun - luckily not when being worn!).
