Making Art With Fire!

After approximately 40 years, a long marriage, two children, numerous pets and several mind numbing 'real' jobs, I finally realised I didn't have to go 'out' to work!! I left the full time office work world behind and apart from three very pleasant mornings as a medical secretary, the rest of my time is spent on art. What a lovely life!

My foray into the art and history of encaustics was a slow burn (sorry!). The deeper I get into the the story of encaustic art and experiment with the many ways it can be used the more I love it.

Encaustic art goes back to the time of the ancient Egyptians and examples of this medium have been found in the pyramids - in near perfect condition!

Encaustic medium is a mixture of refined beeswax and tree resin which is melted and applied to different surfaces in many, many thin layers. Each layer must be bonded to the last by melting the wax with a blow torch.

Once fully cured the resulting artwork will not fade and is impervious to damp. In fact, each piece will just get better and better as the years go by. A real family heirloom!

No two pieces can ever be exactly the same. Our destiny is in the lap of the encaustic Gods - which makes it doubly exciting! Too hot? Too cold? Just right? We never know until the piece tells us it is finished.

I now have a full blown encaustics love affair and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Frequently asked questions
Care instructions

Encaustics need a bit of extra love! The wax will take up to six months to fully cure, so if your artwork is fairly new it will continue to take on a white bloom until it is fully matured. This is simple to remove by polishing with a soft lint free cloth, a pair of ladies' tights or the palm of your hand. This will restore the natural sheen. Until the piece completely hardens please do not stick your nails in it to check!!
