Announcement   Thanks so much for checking out my shop! Take a look around to see if any of my pieces will help you tell your unique story.

Have an old pendant, earring or piece of personal ephemera you'd love to see reincarnated as the focal point in a custom-made beadwoven creation? Have an accessory idea but not the time or patience to execute it yourself? Send me a message and together we'll bring it to life. I LOVE to collaborate, and would be honored to create something especially for you.

Again - thanks for checking out backstagecrafts and for supporting handmade!

Cheers,
Rhiannon

Backstage Crafts created a one of a kind wearable art piece for me based on a painting my sister made. The finished product is better than I could have imagined. Rhiannon is an amazing artist; clever, creative, masterful, careful, thoughtful, and visionary. She can take the most simple thing and transform it into something so special. She is a great communicator and kept in touch while she was busy working on my piece. She sent pictures of the process and checked in after I had given this piece away as a gift to see how the recipient liked it. Shipping was faster than fast. I cannot say enough about Backstage Crafts and Rhiannon. I commend this shop to everyone and I will be back again and again.

For Christmas this year I wanted to get my wife something special. Rhiannon was able to take my random suggestions and turn them into this absolutely gorgeous piece that fits my wife's personality, wardrobe, and cultural heritage.

This photo was taken back when I was developing my Braille Bracelet line last Spring. I'm now starting to list the collection on Etsy, starting with this little lilac number, which says "you are loved".

About

backstagecrafts: from stories to stitches

In first grade I was Annie Oakley in our class play. It's safe to say that the steady diet of Shel Silverstein, Mr. Rogers and Jim Henson that my mom fed me during my younger years helped ensure an imaginative trajectory for my life, but that first foray on the stage launched my heart into the world of performing forever. Trained by wonderful public school teachers throughout my grade school and college years, I remained active in theatre and music.

I was always a maker, crafting various things by hand, but it wasn't until learning to knit for a role during college that I began adding visual arts into my storytelling toolbox. I created so many hats and scarves that first year that I dubbed myself "backstagecrafts" (a play on "backstage" and "stagecraft," two words that could accurately describe how I spend much of my time) and started selling them, first to friends and family and eventually at art/craft fairs. After awhile I started embellishing the hats with free-hand bead embroidery, but I wanted more complexity, so I started to soaking up beadweaving knowledge wherever I could find it and eventually the hats disappeared and my designs became pure beadwork.

I continue to perform as a singer/songwriter/actor/puppeteer and I work in the world of circus, so I naturally view my work through a vivid theatrical lens and tend to think of every piece I make as telling a visual story. I was recently working on a Wild West-themed circus production and concurrently began a beadwoven design full of cowboy & outlaw imagery. I thought back to my first role in first grade and smiled at the notion of revisiting the same stories throughout life. What a gift, to be able to store them in your imagination to be revived by the curious circumstances you find yourself in from day to day and year to year!

I look forward to the continued evolution of the process of designing through the lens of performance and hope people enjoy my beaded interpretations of the stories I conjure!

I come from the world of theatre, of imagination and of trying to do & see things differently than everyone else. I strive to live as creative a life as possible. I want my mark on this world to be a window into another.
