How it all began........

Well this story starts in the year 2006 (yikes!) when I was contacted shortly after I had my middle child.

Someone was looking for a seamstress to make bags so they could sell them at home parties and such. I was given a sample bag and went to work. A few months went by and this was my main income. Then things started to slow down, and I thought why can't I do this on my own.

So in August of 2006 I hit Joann's and bought a ton of fabric which would be to start my business. I have to admit the styles I was making back then were, um shall we say interesting..... and well, lets not talk about the photography (not that it is perfect now mind you).

Fast forward to 2007 and I got an email from someone, who now is still one of my closest friends. She was starting a bag business where she would have consultants selling bags, and then I would make them, (perfect). She challenged me to make different shapes and sizes, and I did it. This was the year I started making everything from wine totes to cosmetic pouches. This lasted almost the whole year, and during that time I had my final child.

In 2008 the cosmetic pouches were doing well, so were little rectangle wallets, and the occasional wristlet (it took me until 2012 to perfect that, more about that soon). This was also the year of the shopping tote. Well remember all that fabric I bought in 2006, I was kind of sick of working with it, I was introduced to the finer cottons from designers such as Amy Butler, and Michael Miller. Once I went there I didn't want to go back. So those shopping totes were perfect for using up all that old stuff! I also started doing some craft shows as well.

2009, we will just call the year of the mini key fob. Which to date is my best seller. That's all I made, most of this year I remember being very distracted and didn't get a whole lot done, so I guess we can move forward.

It is now September of 2012 (yes I know I skipped a few years, but hey, I had nothing very exciting to mention). I am going to dub this year, the year of perfecting my craft (with that said, yes I can always learn more). I pulled out several old patterns that I had struggled with in the past six years, such as hobo bags, and wristlets. My cosmetic pouches got a revamping, and so have my wallets. Things were coming together so nicely. Have spent the majority of my summer doing outdoor markets (which was a new thing for me) and have had the best time doing it. I have been able to have my stuff placed in shops around the state.

Shop policies

I have laid out my shop policies below. If you still have questions please don't hesitate to contact me. All my items are ready to ship once payment has cleared, the only exception to this is if I am doing a custom order.

Accepted payment methods

  • Accepts Etsy Gift Cards and Etsy Credits
Returns and exchanges
Each return is handled on a case by case basis.

Custom orders are non-refundable.

My first priority is to make sure you are completely happy so please work with me before leaving any negative/neutral feedback.
PayPal is my preferred method of payment, but will take other forms of payment also.

If your sending a check or money order, I will not ship your bag until the funds have cleared, this may take up to 14 business days.

To pay via credit card you do not need to have a PayPal account. Please let me know this is how you choose to pay and I will send you an invoice that gives you the option of just paying one time with a credit card.
Anything that has a shipping cost of $5 or more will go out via Priority Mail which normally takes 3 business days to arrive, all else will ship first class. Within the 50 states.

As far as international shipping, I always try to send the item first class, as this is the least expensive way to go. If you would like it to go priority please keep in mind that it could cost up to $35 to do so, let me know either via a convo prior to purchasing, or in the notes to seller so I can send you an adjusted invoice for shipping charges.

Items always ship the next day after I receive payment Monday through Friday. If you order on Saturday or Sunday your order will go out on a Monday (as long as there are no holidays).
Additional policies and FAQs
I love doing custom orders! I take 50% payment up front on the order, then the balance is due upon completion.

I do my best to leave feedback after the item has been paid for. I do not wait for you to leave feedback for me first, so you have no worries of getting a retaliatory feedback from me.

I would appreciate getting feedback, I feel it is important for others to know about my products and service.

Wholesale inquiries are welcome at any time.

Depending on how crazy my life is at the time will depend on what I may or not be able to supply to you.

If you have any additional questions feel free to contact me via the conversation feature on etsy or email me at bagsbymelanie [!at]
