    I want to be remembered

A few years ago, I really started to think about my work, my life and what I was leaving behind. By day, I am a web developer. I love creating for the web; crafting experiences for visitors to my sites is incredibly satisfying for me. However, I started to realize that I really don't have any tangible proof that I was ever "here".

Now, I don't have a life threatening illness, nor do I have any loved ones that are on their death beds. At least...I hope I don't. I'm not really sure what triggered the "when I'm gone, what have I left behind" thoughts. All I do know is that it bothered me and I wanted to find a way to change that. I made the decision that I would find ways to create "things" that I could give to friends and family. Hand made gifts that were created out of love. Gifts that - I hoped - would bring joy and happiness to the person receiving them. I decided that I would challenge myself to learn a new craft every year and it started with crochet.

I had learned to crochet as a kid. I have 4 siblings, so when we would be dropped off at Grandma's house for the summer...well, I'm sure it was a little overwhelming. One year, she decided she was going to find a way to keep us busy by showing us how to crochet our own blankets. I remember sitting there for hours just working on that blanket, and, over the summer finally completing it. Fast forward quite a few years and those memories came back to me and I decided to start with crochet for my first craft.

After relearning the basics, I quickly became obsessed with Amigurumi. I enrolled in Stacey Trock's classes on Craftsy and soon began making stuffed animals for friends and co-workers who were having babies. They loved them and I got a ton of compliments. It felt awesome!

In July of 2013, I decided I would tackle something that I had always been afraid of: knitting. Something about holding 2 needles always made me nervous. I thought "I could never do that, I'll just stick to crochet". I'm so glad I didn't give into that fear. I love, LOVE, knitting. Whether I'm making a hat or a cowl or a shawl or a sweater, I find the act of knitting so relaxing. And the look on peoples faces when they see my creations is worth the hours I put into each of my projects. I haven't created my own designs yet, but I've got my sights set on that goal.

2014 was the year I decided I was going to learn to sew. I had seen other knitters carrying their yarny goodness around in "knitting bags". I was so jealous because I was just using plastic bags. I decided that my creations needed something a little more "special" to live in while I was working to finish them. That is what led me to learn to make bags. After making a few prototypes, I honed in on the things that I really wanted to see in a bag. Turns out, other people wanted the same things and I started getting asked "where did you get that bag?!". After explaining that I had made it - and the look of confusion left their face - they would ultimately ask if I was selling them.

It was never my intention, but I started to think about it. What if I did sell them? What if I did take something that I created for myself and shared it with the world? That is how BagsByTerry started. If you decide to share in my passion, I hope you enjoy the bags as much as I do :)

I'm a geek, a knitter, a hooker (in the crochet sense, that is) and recently I've added sewing to my crafting repertoire. I love challenging myself with new skills and I can't wait to find my next passion.
