About

Bakeapple Beginnings

Hand knit socks, sweater, mitts and caps, shared quilts and warm food on cold days. Fall fairs exploring things handmade, baked goods and folk art. Hours upon hours spent outdoors. These are the experiences growing up in a large family in rural Newfoundland that shaped my love of things handmade, simple, and lovely.

My shop is named for the Bakeapple: a hard to find but popular berry that grows in Newfoundland. They are quite unique in taste and appearance. For this reason and the connection to Newfoundland I chose to use them in my shop name.

Beginning with patchwork quilting I learned to sew from my mother as a teen, but after university I left Newfoundland to explore other parts of the world. Seeing and experiencing craft and culture in other places opened my eyes to new possibilities and prompted me to expand my sewing skills into bags and wallets. From there it has been a continuous expansion into almost anything that can be made from needle and thread.

I try to repurpose used clothing, fabric, and other items into both my accessories and quilt designs and packaging whenever possible.
