About

Your "ahhh, that's it!" personal care products.

I bet you're asking yourself, "why do we need another lip balm maker?" Well, the answer is simple, I hadn't found one I liked! OK, that's not entirely true, I found one lady at a craft fair in Carpenteria, CA (120 miles from our house) about 7 years ago that made a balm that opened my eyes to the world of natural, handmade balms. Up to that point, with my hypersensitive skin, I was struggling to find anything that didn't leave my lips peeling and worse off than before I used the balm. Her balm was just that: all-natural, soothing, not too hard, not too soft, moisturizing, no crazy scents or sweetness, perfect!

Since the fair was only once a year at Christmastime, I would visit her and buy enough to last me until the next year. I did that for 3 years, and then the next year, I turned the corner where her booth always was and she wasn't there. I'm not joking, I almost started crying. That was about 4 years ago. I still went every year, hoping she'd come back. Nope, she didn't. Since then, I have tried every lip balm I could get my hands on, but I just haven't found one that I liked.

Last January, I decided that was it. If the lady in Carpenteria could make a bitchin' lip balm, so could I! I started researching recipes and ordering supplies and tweaking it until I got to a point where my lips said, "ahhh, that's it!"

So, that brings us to the beard balm and my husband, Damon's, involvement. This story starts in Ventura, down the road from Carpinteria.

We were shopping the main drag (they have some wonderful thrift stores if you're into that) and we stopped in a manly-type store that sold this thing called "beard balm." What the heck was that? Beard balm, never heard of it. Anyway, we opened the tin and it smelled wonderful! Woodsy and natural and yummy with a nice, smooth consistency. Damon decided he'd give a try (at $35 a tin!?!) and for the first two tins, it was great! He liked how it held his flyaways down, he liked the smell throughout the day, he liked taking care of his beard. He used up the first two tins and then some time passed before he ordered another (shipping was $11.00 on top of the $35, ouch!)

—I haven't mentioned this yet, but another BIG reason this business was started is because I get migraines, and a lot of the time, they are triggered by scent. We have to be very careful what we wear, where we sit at events, how we walk through a department store, everyone I know knows not to wear perfume or lotion around me... Yeah, it sucks.—

Anywho, this third tin arrived and for whatever reason, my head decided the scent was going to start triggering migraines. What? Why? It was fine for two tins. Damnit. I hated to have to tell Damon that he couldn't wear it anymore and that he wasted that much money on it. It was bad enough that I could smell it on him, but when I kissed him it transferred the scent to my face as well. I just couldn't take it.

So, Balms Not Bombs was born. We figured I can't be the only one out there with such sensitivities, so these products are for you! I realize everyone's triggers are different and everyone has different sensitivities, but I won't use anything in our products that I can't handle. We hope you find our balms and care products to be your "ahhh, that's it" products. Our recipes are intentional, we don't add things just to have more ingredients. We keep it simple, like us!

TL:DR We started Balms Not Bombs because I have skin and migraine sensitivities and I needed products that made my lips better, not worse and products that didn't have heavy, migraine-inducing scents. We couldn't find them so we made them!

Live Peacefully,
Balms Not Bombs
