About

Barbara Donovan / Animal Art Pottery

I am a potter in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where I make colorful functional porcelain pottery inspired by wild things and quirky pets. Originally from northeast Ohio, I live here in the deep south with my dear husband, a sweet wild kitty, and two much loved bad dogs. Having always been drawn to animals, I thought at one time I would be a veterinarian, but a squeamish nature proved that impossible. I was a crafty kid who hooked rugs and embroidered but never considered an art career until discovering clay in my second year of college. My BFA is from Louisiana State University (1986), and MFA from Wichita State University (1989). Somehow after college without really meaning to we ended up in Baton Rouge again, and I’ve been making animal pots of some sort or another here ever since.

I currently enjoy working with midrange domestic porcelain electric kiln fired to cone 6. The pots are wheel thrown, altered, and carved to accentuate animal imagery. Colorful commercial underglazes are applied at the leather hard stage. With the exception of the occasional Virgin Mary theme inspired by a lengthy Catholic upbringing, most of my imagery has revolved around animals since early in my undergraduate days. Over time the animals have slowly transformed from graceful and stoic expressionless creatures to the nervous, puzzled, frequently annoyed, sometimes painfully cute characters that liven my pots today. Function has always been an important consideration in the work, and I strive to create comfortable, joyful pots for everyday use.

Frequently asked questions

Do you ship internationally?

Ceramics is weighty and usually expensive to ship internationally, but I would be happy to provide you with a shipping quote. Shipping for small items to Canada are already included in some listings.

What about loss or damage?

IN CASE OF DAMAGE: I use quality packing supplies and pack carefully. In the unlikely event of damage in shipping, please save the packaging for possible shipper damage claim and contact me right away. Send me a picture of the damaged piece and packaging for proof, and I will replace the piece or issue a refund.

IN CASE OF LOSS: Both USPS and FedEx require several weeks before a package is considered truly lost. Your patience while we wait them out is greatly appreciated.

Custom and personalized orders

I'd love to consider your custom requests. I'm happy to make pots inspired by your pet, but do not personalize my pottery with names. Custom requests take 3 to 8 weeks depending on what's going on in studio.

Donation Information

As you can imagine, I receive numerous requests for donations of pottery to worthy fundraising events. While I'd love to help everyone, I unfortunately cannot afford to do so. Donations of pottery for fundraising events are limited to arts related and animal rescue events in my local area and to those of my close friends, family, and some established customers. Thank you for understanding.

Consignment and Wholesale

I'm not open to new consignment or wholesale requests at this time.

Additional Cancellation Information

If you've missed the 3 hour time limit for cancelling an order, contact me anyway. I sometime ship within a few hours but more generally within 1 - 3 business days so there is a chance your order hasn't left my studio yet.
