About BarefootTextileArt

Sales 27
On Etsy since 2018

I enjoy working with natural and recycled materials to capture the mesmerising colours & calming qualities of the coast and countryside.

About My Items

All the fabric items and textile art works in my shop are home-made by me. I take great care in creating each item, with a thoughtful attention to detail, along with great enjoyment of the creative process. Even my most simple items often involving several hours of work of planning and cutting the design, machine stitching and hand stitching of intricate details. When purchasing through my shop, you will be buying a unique, carefully crafted home-made item, created as far as possible with natural materials.

About Waste

Where possible, the fabric I use is recycled, with many scraps and remnants gathered from my local upholstery shop. I take great care to minimise waste of resources and I even keep tiny fabric scraps and ends of threads for creating new layered fabrics using free embroidery and water soluble fabric to hold the pieces together. Any fabric waste not used in these creations is either made into draft-excluders or collected for fabric recycling.

About Me

I have enjoyed making things for as long as I can remember. From around 7 years old I became really keen on embroidery, initially sewing simple samplers then complex pictures on blank canvas. My love of sewing has never left me. When I'm sewing I feel totally absorbed & time disappears. I find it a very mindful process.

About My Approach

I find nature mesmerising in its beauty and I love to try to capture this in my textile art pieces. My favourite textile art approach involves combining embroidery (both hand embroidery & free embroidery on the sewing machine) with fabric to form intricately layered stitched landscapes. Fabric pieces become my palette, with the textures and weave of the material reflecting the natural world. One of my textile pictures was selected for the competitive Royal West of England Academy Open Art exhibition 2018.

About New Ways of Working

I also enjoy working with felt; this is a new medium for me, but this natural material is fun and versatile to work with great effects afforded by the ease with which colours can be woven together.
