About

Treasures to Wear and Carry

My love for miniatures has been life-long. I started BaroqueGarden on Etsy with the hope of reaching other people like me, who never want to lose their childlike curiosity and imagination.

As a small child I would carry a palm-sized doll around with me in my pocket, feeling like I had a secret best friend. Holding something miniature, I could imagine myself in another world.

My shadowbox pendants combine several of my favorite art forms. I have been making tiny dolls and flowers and designing jewelry for years, and began experimenting with landscape painting when I was in college. I began thinking about how I could transform these miniatures into something wearable, and I got excited about the idea of creating miniature paintings that also had a sculptural element to them. The concept of my shadowbox pendants was born! Eventually I narrowed my ideas down into several categories: landscapes, doors, and still lives-- scenes with tiny furniture and vases of flowers.

Making these pendants requires a long and detailed process, which can be completely different from pendant to pendant. It is very much an improvisational process! When I have an idea for something new I want to make, I have to figure out the best way to go about creating it-- often this planning and designing process is most of the work! With the exception of the tiny glass bottles I use for vases, I make absolutely everything inside each by hand.

Most of the materials I use in my shadowboxes are found in nature, so the way I look at plants tends to be quite closely zoomed-in. When I look at a seed pod, I can't help but imagine what sorts of tiny things I could make from it.

I hope that you find as much delight in my tiny worlds as I do-- and that they might inspire you to look at the world from another perspective!

xoxo,
Glenna
