About

Handcrafted Wood Treasures from beginning to end.

Start with a simple seed and watch it grow. WOW check this out! Countless gardeners along with woodworkers and many others know the "WOW" feeling. As a young boy I would spend a week during the summers with my cousins. Digging potatoes was a family affair, loading potatoes in wheelbarrows, buckets and the little wagon. My Aunt still mentions today, some 50 years later, how my eyes would get so big with amazement seeing potatoes roll out of the ground. The potato is no different than a tree, some big, some small and each and everyone as it's own unique characteristics.

My Grandfather (Ernest Barrett 1899-1984 Farmer and Carpenter) and my father (Clarence Barrett 1923-2006 trim carpenter, cabinet maker and entrepreneur) have had the most influence in my woodworking career. I use every inch of wood that I possibly can, why waste a perfectly good piece of wood. Waste Not, Want Not! Today, the terms, Reclaimed, Recycled and Green are nothing new to me, as those same principles were passed down from past generations. Use what you have and use them to the best of your ability.

I log and saw my own timber. I am not a production logger, I try to make the best of each tree from the stump to the very top. In the above photos you will see my current Bandmill which replaced a 00 Frick circle sawmill. After the drying process, it's on to the shop. What will be the final outcome of the material? Use it in it's rough sawn state, surface all 4 sides, flooring, paneling, moulding, furniture. In some cases, it's all of the above!

Woodturning :
I have used a lathe off and on since the ‘70’s. After the recession hit me hard in 2002 and TOO much time between orders, I picked up the old chisels again and I was about as rusty as the lathe itself! I added a few accessories and accessories add up fast $$$$$$$$! I need to lower my debt ceiling, NOT increase it! I make a few of my own lathe tools from high speed steel cutoffs and router bits that I have accumulated over the years and making various wood chucks. Woodturning is both enjoyable and relaxing and some how the wood pile seems to accumulate more these days. Cool weather comes and I ask myself the question; Should I turn it or burn it?!

Currently you may have noticed the low number of listings to date. Family matters are a priority over my shop time and my time is limited. Caring for my mother, who will be 91 this coming March, is a chore in itself. Her health has declined since my father passed away and also losing a sister, she loved dearly, in late 2011.

My banner photo was taken from the roof top of my house, in which I am the 3rd generation here, and I will end with this final thought;
Home is Where the Heart is.

Thanks for taking the time to read my short story and Lord willing, I will see you tomorrow.

    I have lived, breathed and bleed sawdust all of my life. I enjoy and love working with wood from it’s standing state, to the finished form. I am always amazed what nature can produce, uncovering the natural beauty within.
