About

From Innisfail to Portland

I learned the art of batik in grade 9 classroom, in the tiny town of Innisfail, Alberta, Canada.

Learning in a small school, that has never - like me - had much of a budget, I learned by using everyday materials. I use newspapers for removing wax, instead of boiling water; paraffin wax, instead of beeswax; cheap paint brushes, instead of tjanting tools; and cotton, instead of silk. Because I use these basic materials and choose single images, my pieces are ultimately wall tapestries instead of traditional clothing and wearable items.

I make hand-painted batik paintings on cotton fabric. My work is based on images I find, or photographs I've taken; and I also specialize in custom pet portraits!
