My secret purchaser was very pleased with this painting. She intends to have it framed as a Christmas gift for a loved one. Thanks, Barb

This a is beautiful picture with subtle colors and textures. You can almost smell the grass.
A little obsessed with trees...
I started drawing and painting seriously in high school and college, and in the past 20 years there has never been a time that I wasn’t making artwork. But for a long time I didn’t have good discipline. That all began to change in 2007 when I first signed up for Paint Snow Hill, a plein air painting event on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. I always enjoyed painting from life, but with outdoor painting my subject is a moving target. Everything is alive and changing right in front of me—the weather, the light, the temperature, and the time of day—so I only have a short period of time to work. And I like that. Painting en plein air was really an eye-opener for me. It gave me a lot of focus and sparked my love of landscapes.
And it was excellent training for painting with babies, which is the next thing that happened in my life. I have two beautiful little girls whom I dearly love. They limit my time with a brush in my hand, but balancing my family and my studio practice drives me to be more efficient when I’m working. Because of my plein air experience I am productive when I can get into my studio or get out into the world for inspiration, even when I only have short bursts of time to paint. These days I mostly work from memory, photos, and sketches in my studio after the girls have gone to bed. So my very supportive husband gets a big “thank you!” for helping make that happen.
The subjects I’m drawn to lately are trees, old houses, farm fields, and light, and I’m sure it has to do with my upbringing. I grew up in the house my great-grandparents built about a hundred years ago, which is surrounded by woods. And my home now is also in the woods. I love places like that that hold the echoes of time. I want to make sure I really look closely at these places and remember them and create a record of them in paint.
Barb Mowery attended Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Virginia, where she was fortunate to study with abstract painter Nan Covert. She is a member of the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association and is represented by Bishop’s Stock Fine Art, Craft & Wine in Snow Hill, Maryland. Mowery’s paintings are in private collections in the United States and abroad. Her studio is located in Southern Maryland where she lives with her husband, two daughters, and dog.
I am a Maryland artist painting in acrylics, currently very much in love with trees and light.
