Bead Amigas

Bead Amigas was co-founded in 2008 by artist and jewelry designer, Allison Morris. While on a mission trip in 2007 in Nicaragua, she recognized that it might be possible to employ impoverished Nicaraguan women to reproduce her paper bead jewelry designs. Allison was guided by a strong desire to create opportunity for the women she met by offering them a fair wage in exchange for the quality craftsmanship they could provide.

Initially, Allison and some valuable volunteers produced the paper bead jewelry themselves and sold it to fund the upstart of Bead Amigas. She needed to raise enough capital to purchase materials and training supplies to take to Nicaragua.

On her third trip to Nicaragua she held a week long "craft class" for women in the village where she was working. Every woman was invited to spend several hours a day learning how to make paper beads. At the end of the week, encouraged by several women who had returned to the class day after day, she told the participants that it was possible to turn their newly learned craft into a business. Before leaving Nicaragua, she provided each woman with additional paper bead and jewelry making supplies. Three months later she received a package from Nicaragua full of jewelry that some of the women had made after she left. Once again, Allison was encouraged - this time by their tenacious and entrepreneurial spirits.

Allison returned to Nicaragua for a fourth time to conduct a more intensive paper bead and jewelry making workshop. The women were taught how to measure and cut the paper, roll the beads with precision, and to glaze the beads. They were also instructed in the use of jewelry making tools and techniques.

Later, Allison decided to incorporate hand painted paper beads into her designs. Bead Amigas hired one young woman, Yoselin, to paint all of the paper. Previously, Yoselin had never had the opportunity to work with paints and she had no concept of color mixing. Using only primary colors plus black and white, Allison trained her in color theory principles. Yoselin was a very quick study and maintained a true understanding of what she learned. She was now able to mix colors and apply designs to paper in whatever specifications Allison could conceive of!

Allison is very to proud to have had the experience of working closely with the manufacturers of her jewelry. The result of this partnership with her Nicaraguan counterparts is not only the opportunity that was created for these women, but the manifestation of her beautiful designs into tangible pieces of affordable, wearable art.
