About

Artist Bio

I love making art. I love the creative process, expressing inspiration and emotion in a tangible image to share with others. I work in many different media because each one inspires and challenges differently.

Masks are wearable sculpture, content to be on the wall, but coming alive when being worn. A mask is about pretending to be something else, about hiding, and about revealing.

It takes about two days to make a mask. The materials must be gathered and prepped. The velvet backing must be sewn on. The ribbons and trim are glued, then the flower petals and sequins. The mask dries over night, then the crystals and final touches are added. I love walking into the studio the next day to see a mask almost done. The most challenging part is getting the eyes right, and it’s usually the last thing I do. Ultimately, there must be something in the look that is captivating and magnetic, so that you don’t want to look away.

Painting is an explosion of color and emotion for me. I start by covering the canvas in a wash of color, and build layer upon layer of gestures. A lot can be expressed with line and line quality.

I come from a figurative drawing background, which almost always finds its way into my artwork. The human body is a beautiful subject, especially the personality, attitude and body language. So much can be said with a look or an angle. I find the more abstract a body becomes, the more universal it is. If you look beyond appearances, you see the internal journey that we all share on some level.

To support my art habit, I am the Production Stage Manager at Madison Opera. I draw a lot of inspiration for my artwork from the theatrical process.
