So many visions, not enough hours in the day!

I fell in love with the beads I found at Lee Wards as an 11 year old kid, from tiny carved bone elephants, to luminous swirling mother of pearl beads; and I was fascinated by the possibilities I found playing with wire, starting with a little kit for making “Indian rings”. The first 3D thing I made was a green peace sign with silver-lined rocaille seed beads. I loved the “French” flowers made with wire and expanded on the “Indian ring” technique to make my own flowers and Christmas ornaments, before moving on to other art forms in high school.

I rediscovered beads right before I got sober at 24, and learned peyote stitch from the Deadheads I was hanging out with. They took me to my first bead show in the DC area, and I realized I had a unique gift, and I knew that making stuff out of beads was all I wanted to do. Soon after I taught myself brick stitch, and started making masks as well.

After a dozen years weaving with seed beads, a friend gave me a box of broken jewelry, including some big hammered silver balls, and I started making Christmas ornaments, too. Soon after, I began playing with sterling silver and gold-filled wire, creating two distinctive lines of wire jewelry with endless possibilities. My bramble series is descended from my scratchy pen and ink sketches and my love of nature. My spirals are all about geometry, which can be both fluidly primal and sharply modern. Stick pearls have become a favorite, and finding unique gemstones is always inspiring.

I hope you’ll find something you love, or something that inspires you here in my Etsy shop!

I do beadwork, and make jewelry especially, because I am still entranced by beads, and wearing a miniature work of art is a great way to connect without even saying a word. Most of my stuff comes from the sheer pleasure of playing with color, texture, rocks, metal, glass; it's really about how it feels, not something I'm trying to "say". My mouth works just fine when I've got something to say, ask anybody! So my art is about beauty: color, light, shape, and texture, with very rare exceptions - such as my Celtic Moon series, and my few tongue-in-cheek erotic pieces. I still strive to break the boundaries of conventional beadwork by creating unheard of dimensions in beadweaving, as well as affordable, original jewelry design with precious metals and beads.

I use sterling and fine silver, as well as 14karat yellow and rose gold-filled beads, wire and chain. Rather than using vermeil, which is a very thin layer of gold over silver, gold-filled components are made with two layers of karat gold bonded to a brass core, where the karat gold is 300% thicker than it is on vermeil, so it is both durable and affordable. I also make occasional use of solid copper, brass and vintage metals where noted.

For those with sensitive ears, Niobium (a super hypoallergenic metal in the same family as Titanium) earwires are available at no extra charge. Solid 14karat white, yellow and rose gold earwires and posts are available at current market prices. A few of my most complex woven pieces are made exclusively with solid gold.

Returns and exchange details
Refunds and exchanges may be negotiated at the seller's discretion. Most of my jewelry is quite sturdy, since I myself tend to be hard on things and I want them to last forever - I hate to do all that work for nothing! But the nature of the medium is that some things are fragile and many beads are still hand-drilled and handcrafted, so durability can vary. And even the finest pearls need to be restrung every couple of years!
For the most part, simply avoid spraying perfume or hairspray or applying cosmetics or lotions while wearing beaded jewelry, and remove before swimming, showering or sleeping. Woven pieces can be cleaned with a soft cloth or a soft unused toothbrush - never use chemical cleaners. Store metal jewelry protected from air and moisture, in a closed box or bag.
Return shipping will be paid by the buyer, and reimbursed for items that were damaged in transit after a claim is settled.
Refunds for jewelry lost or damaged in transit will be made when claims are settled by the shipper, USPS or FedEx, usually after 30 days. Be sure to keep the packaging for inspection if something is damaged or missing from the package, and contact me immediately if you have any problem at all.

Why is 14Karat Gold-Filled so much better than gold-plated or vermeil (a thin layer of gold over silver)?

Goldfilled jewelry is a lifetime product, made with a thick layer of karat gold bonded to a core of jeweler's brass. The gold layer is legally required to be 5%, or 1/20 of the total weight: 14k GF is stamped with a mark that says "14/20" (on commercially produced earwires, etc). I use 14k GF findings and wire from reputable sources such as Halstead Bead and Rio Grande.

By contrast, gold-plated products have an applied gold surface layer that is just 1/100th (0.05%) of goldfilled, and like vermeil, which has a layer of higher karat gold over silver, usually tarnishes easily and wears away quickly.

14k GF is resistant to tarnish but can in extreme conditions and salt air, so for best results store it sealed away from air, in a box or bag.
