Smart Jewelry & Accessories

Scientist-turned-artist Amanda Preske is on a mission to bridge the gap between science and art while encouraging responsible recycling. With her business, Circuit Breaker Labs, she transforms electronic waste into wearable art and gift products in her Washington, D.C. studio. These boards were discarded and unwanted, but when paired with Amanda’s expertise and critical eye, they become beautiful futuristic worlds captured under resin.

Amanda’s foray into creative business began as a teenager. Enthralled with glass beads and techniques for weaving them together, she had made too much jewelry for her family to wear. She created Beadwork by Amanda at 14 and has been selling her handmade jewelry ever since.

Amanda holds a PhD in chemistry (in semiconductors, no less!) and while she no longer practices in a chemistry lab, her jewelry studio is her current laboratory. Her interest in using circuit boards as a creative medium started as a freshman in chemistry at RIT, where she found constant reminders of the problems caused by obsolete technology. Labs always had broken equipment and dead, dusty computers piled in the corner. Always filled with curiosity and the desire to make things, she disassembled the broken waste and developed a way to morph circuit boards into her polished aesthetic.

Over a decade later, Amanda is still enthralled with the beauty in electronics and has turned everything from computers and cell phones to calculators and Arduinos into jewelry, accessories, gifts, and décor. Unfortunately for the planet, there is no shortage of electronic waste and Amanda sources everything from individuals, universities, and companies looking for alternative ways to handle e-waste.

Everything from cleaning newly acquired circuit boards, applying resin, and packaging and shipping orders all happens in the lab. Just like a real lab, close-toed shoes, pants, and PPE (personal protective equipment) are required for safety! Amanda is involved every step of the way, and she’s the one you hear from directly when you send an e-mail or reach out over social media. So, if you want to learn more about Amanda and what she does, don’t hesitate to send a convo or comment on an Instagram post to connect with Circuit Breaker Labs!

If you live in MD, I have to collect 6% sales tax. Etsy will automatically charge the sales tax based on your shipping address.
Shipping

I ship all ready made items within 3 business days of purchase. Custom orders my take from 2-14 days depending on the nature of the custom item(s).

To non-US customers: Note that I do not pay any duties, customs fees, or any other associated fees. These are the responsibility of the buyer if their country charges these types of fees. Please be aware of customs information including any fees that may be incurred on your end before purchasing. This information can be found at your local post office or on the web. It has come to my attention that for some buyers, Etsy is posting a message saying I am taking care of taxes. Unfortunately, that is not true. I do not have the authority to collect such taxes. Therefore, they are still the responsibility of the buyer to pay these taxes in order to collect your purchase at the post office. If you purchase an item not realizing the expense of duties, you are welcome to refuse the item and have it sent back to me. In that case, I will refund the cost of undamaged items less a 10% restocking fee.

If the tracking indicates that your order was delivered, the item is considered delivered. Please ask neighbors, doormen, and your local post office about the whereabouts of the package (you have the tracking number) if you cannot locate it. Check with housemates, behind obstacles, and around your entrance for the package.

For assistance and to arrange for a replacement (if applicable), you must notify Circuit Breaker Labs of the missing package within five business days of the delivery date noted in the tracking. If the item arrives damaged, please send a photos of the damage (both the item and the outer packaging) and we can work out a replacement or refund. Damage claims must be submitted within five business days of delivery.

Frequently asked questions
Wholesale availability

Please take a look at my wholesale page through Etsy Wholesale OR visit my website and request a linesheet: Http://CircuitBreakerLabs.com/wholesale

Care instructions

Every order comes with a care instructions card. Resin is pretty durable, but if it does get scratched, simply buff it using plastic polish or vegetable oil using a soft cloth. Handle this jewelry like your other silver jewelry. Silver can be polished to restore shine. Also, these pieces are durable enough to be cleaned in your jewelry cleaner- just don't use any chemicals on them. The jewelry is waterproof but try to sustain from prolonged water contact.

Are those real circuit boards?

Yes! I use only broken, obsolete circuit boards from computers, calculators, and cell phones. The color you see, called soldermask, is usually green for circuit boards because it's easier for manufacturers to detect defects. However, other colors are used too, which is why my jewelry comes in a rainbow of colors!

Is this jewelry safe to wear?

Absolutely! While some older circuit boards may contain heavy metals, they do not pose a threat because it's in very low concentrations and you'd have to eat them to receive exposure. Furthermore, my jewelry is encased in resin and metal so the circuit board will never actually come in contact with you. This is really important! I also do not make or sell "bare" circuit board jewelry because they are made from fiberglass, which can irritate your skin.

Custom and personalised orders

Just send me a conversation or email (CircuitBreakerLabs@gmail.com) with any project, no matter how simple or complex, and I'll get back to you with options, a timeline, and price quote. Look here for a gallery of custom made projects: https://circuitbreakerlabs.myshopify.com/pages/custom-projects Simple requests (like if you want something with a chip on it or a longer chain) can be made in the note to seller box at checkout.

Gift wrapping and packaging

Every item will come in a gift box with a circuit board design. To conserve paper, I never include an invoice, so if it's being shipped as a gift, no worries! If you want to include a gift message, let me know what you'd like it to say in the notes to seller box, and I'll hand write it on a circuit board note card.

How does international shipping work?

Orders to Canada have a flat rate shipping fee of $7 USD and all other destinations ship for a flat rate of $9 USD. Please note that some countries impose an import tax or duty and that it is your responsibility as a buyer to pay that duty in order to receive your item(s). Please consult your local post office for information about rates so you're not surprised when you receive your item(s).

I ship everything from my studio within three working days (longer if it is a custom item) but shipping time to your destination will vary depending on a number of factors including weather and customs. While many packages will arrive within 1-2 weeks, please be prepared to wait up to 30 days before receiving your item.
