Announcement   Welcome! I'm on Huffington Post! Watch here: https://www.facebook.com/HuffingtonPost/videos/310172942660193/

I specialize in handmade jewelry made from recycled circuit boards including necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and lovely items for men including cufflinks, tie bars, belt buckles, and more!

Old circuit boards find new life as jewelry and accessories for men and women. We live in a digital age, so it’s only appropriate that computers, calculators and memory cards are put to good use when they break rather than being discarded. The boards, which come in a range of colors, are enhanced through the use of resin, which also protects each piece. Plus, all sterling silver items are made with recycled silver.

Interested in purchasing from me in wholesale? Drop me a line and I'll send you a private link to my linesheet.

If something is out of stock, search "made to order" to find customizable listings. If you see something you like in a color I don't have listed, just let me know and I'll make it available.

All items are skillfully handmade by me, in my Rochester, NY studio. Finished pieces are shipped in 1-3 business days and made to order items are shipped in about a week.

All circuit boards are thoroughly encased in metal and resin, so that no circuit board will touch your skin. Circuit boards contain hazardous materials, so by encasing them, those hazards are removed and make my jewelry perfectly safe to wear. After all, I'm a chemist by training, so safety is a priority!

If you need something shipped quickly, simply select from the expedited shipping options. If you have questions, just ask!

Circuit Board Trade-in Program: If you have an orange and/or brown circuit board(s), you can mail it to me and choose a product I offer in exchange for free with free shipping. Convo me if you’re interested! Specific details are in my shop policies.

Resin kits and tutorials have been phased out of this shop and into my other shop: http://happyrainbow.etsy.com

Take a look at shop local to see where I'll be live at craft shows and festivals.

Feel free to inquire about items not currently stocked or if you have a unique project in mind.

About

Smart Jewelry

The Artist

Amanda Preske has been creating by hand for as long as she can remember. After years of candlemaking, cross stitching, sewing, and silk painting, she found her love for jewelry making. Gifted a box of colorful seed beads as a teenager, she taught herself how to bead weave and slowly branched out into other forms of jewelry making, including glass fusing, enameling, stringing, metalsmithing, and resin casting. When she realized she was making more jewelry than she could possibly wear or gift, she started Beadwork by Amanda when she was 14, and started selling her work at craft shows and on Etsy.

Upon seeing the circuit boards coming from a broken computer her brother was attempting to repair, she became transfixed by the beauty and complexity found on a circuit board. As a whole, the boards are often too complex to appreciate, but on the small scale of jewelry, small portions begin to resemble subway maps, cityscapes, and weird little worlds. Captured under epoxy resin, each piece shines with its own personality. This small venture into circuit board jewelry, which started back in 2007, has since blossomed into a full time business.

Circuit Breaker Labs is intended to be a play on words and a nod to her background. Each cut into the circuit board signifies a broken circuit, so the name is quite literal. With a PhD in chemistry and a love for all things STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math), the lab is where she used to synthesize nanocrystals, and is now a busy jewelry studio.

The Work

Each piece is made from recycled circuit board. Computers, cell phones, calculators, CRT monitors, and office telephones have all been recycled into jewelry by Amanda. The circuit boards are sourced from a number of places. Most notably is at art shows and festivals, where she trades circuit boards for finished jewelry. Each board is extracted from its housing and stripped of all extraneous, tall components. Then the pieces are individually cut from the board, often using just a dremel tool and tin snips, then ground to the proper shape. Everything is thoroughly cleaned and outfitted in vintage, vintage-inspired, or recycled silver settings. Some pieces are made with one of a kind settings that Amanda hand solders together. Every piece is finished with domed epoxy resin. The resin acts as a lens and magnifies the circuit board underneath, creating a beautiful way to view the circuit board.

Amanda creates a range of pieces for men and women, including necklaces, bracelets, earrings, cufflinks, tie bars, and a whole host of other neat products. Everything Amanda makes is made in her Rochester, NY studio.

I have always been involved in some sort of creative process since I was very young. At age 9 I was introduced to beads and have been hooked ever since. I've come a long way and learned much through various sources. Today, bead weaving and working with resin are my favorite. In using recycled circuit boards, my jewelry ensures these waste materials are not discarded.

Please note that all items for sale are handmade by me, with the exception of chains. Everything is already made and ready to ship unless otherwise noted.

*Circuit Board Trade-in Program
If you have an orange and/or brown circuit board(s), I want them! Simply mail the board(s) to me. Then, choose any product* I offer and I will send it to you with free shipping upon receipt of the circuit board(s). Therefore, they are still the responsibility of the buyer to pay these taxes in order to collect your purchase at the post office.

Frequently asked questions

Wholesale availability

Please take a look at my wholesale page through Etsy Wholesale OR visit my website and request a linesheet: Http://CircuitBreakerLabs.com/wholesale

Care instructions

Every order comes with a care instructions card. Resin is pretty durable, but if it does get scratched, simply buff it using plastic polish or vegetable oil using a soft cloth. Handle this jewelry like your other silver jewelry. Silver can be polished to restore shine. Also, these pieces are durable enough to be cleaned in your jewelry cleaner- just don't use any chemicals on them. The jewelry is waterproof but try to sustain from prolonged water contact.

Are those real circuit boards?

Yes! I use only broken, obsolete circuit boards from computers, calculators, and cell phones. The color you see, called soldermask, is usually green for circuit boards because it's easier for manufacturers to detect defects. However, other colors are used too, which is why my jewelry comes in a rainbow of colors!

Is this jewelry safe to wear?

Absolutely! While some older circuit boards may contain heavy metals, they do not pose a threat because it's in very low concentrations and you'd have to eat them to receive exposure. Furthermore, my jewelry is encased in resin and metal so the circuit board will never actually come in contact with you. This is really important! I also do not make or sell "bare" circuit board jewelry because they are made from fiberglass, which can irritate your skin.

Custom and personalised orders

Just send me a conversation or email (CircuitBreakerLabs@gmail.com) with any project, no matter how simple or complex, and I'll get back to you with options, a timeline, and price quote. Simple requests (like if you want something with a chip on it or a longer chain) can be made in the note to seller box at checkout.

Gift wrapping and packaging

Every item will come in a gift box with a circuit board design. To conserve paper, I never include an invoice, so if it's being shipped as a gift, no worries! If you want to include a gift message, let me know what you'd like it to say in the notes to seller box, and I'll hand write it on a circuit board note card.
