Hand sewn miniature, mohair and alpaca teddy bears
I have been creating miniature, mohair and alpaca hand-sewn teddy bears under the name Bearly Bears since 1996. I started off creating small and tiny teddy bears which fit in the palm of my hand (‘barely’ bears) but have evolved my pattern over the years to include a variety of sizes.
My bear pattern is based on traditional, older style bears and often features a prominent back, longer arms, a longer snout and larger feet. Each bear is unique while clearly belonging to the same family.
I use mohair and alpaca as the main fabric for the large bears, and mini bear fabric for the smaller ones, finishing off with ultrasuede for paw pads; glass buttons or beads for eyes; with hand-stitched nose and mouth features. The bears are stuffed with polyester fibre fill or wool stuffing.
The bears come with a swing tag listing their name, date of birth, and materials used; and they are signed on their left foot with ‘Bearly Bears’ and their year of birth.
My bears have been designed and made with the adult collector in mind They also make wonderful heirloom gifts for children to be admired, not played with, and passed down the generations. Because the bears contain small parts they are not toys and are not suitable for children under 14 years of age. Care should be taken to ensure children cannot swallow any small items should they come loose due to excessive wear and tear.
