Announcement    One of a kind hand stitched bears - made with love

My name is Lynn Smith, I live at home with my husband and I work part time as an Practice Manager in a GP practice but in my spare time I am an award winning bear artist and I create one of a kind miniature bears and animals

I was creative from a young age and I used to make things all the time. If there was a toy I really wanted, I would try and make it. I can remember always dreaming about creating something and selling it in my own little shop; I guess that passion has never left me.

My love of bears and all things cuddly also started as a child but I never dreamed one day I would have the potential to make my own.

It takes blood, sweat and tears to create a bear, but most of all a lot of passion, creativity and love

Each bear is one of a kind, and therefore has its own little character.
My bears are jointed, completely hand sewn and are made from quality vegan materials.
Each bear comes with its own name, date of birth and a certificate of authenticity.

PLEASE NOTE: BEARY TALES BEARS ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF FOURTEEN.

About the bears....

So .. about the bears, I used to create lots of different styles of bears, I have worked with mohair, plush, and viscose. I have made traditional bears, realistic bears, contemporary bears and now I create mini bears.

I have learned over the years, in particular from my own collecting habits, that if I fall for a particular type of bear, I will always go back to the same artist for more. So I decided the only way to ensure people would keep coming back to buy my bears, was to find 'my style' and stick with it. Towards the end of last year I designed and created my mini bear and he has so far been a huge success.

I have made bears from 28" to 3" and everything in between, I have learned lots of techniques such as pulled toes, needle sculpting, wire armature, closing eyelids and even creating and fixing individual resin claws. All of these things have created wonderful bears in the past, and for a while I wanted to showcase all my new learned skills, but although my bears were all adopted, there was never a buzz about them.

So why the mini bear? I sat back one day and looked at some of my favourite artists and thought what is it that draws me to a bear, is it the intricate details, is it the way the bear is created (wire armature etc) is it what he is made from? NO.... its all about the face! I can fall in love with a £600 intricately detailed artist bear and I can fall in love with a primitive style £25 artist bear and the only thing that draws me in, is the face..... So that got me thinking. I love making bears, but because I work full-time, if I create super detailed bears they can take weeks to complete, and to be honest I didn't always love the process. I needed to create a bear that I LOVED to make, in a material that I loved working with, that would allow me to create at the very least one bear a week. A happy bear artist, creates a happy bear (or a least a successful bear) If you don't enjoy the process, or it's a process that makes you feel rushed, then it wont result in a cute bear.

So I got to work and started to design a bear based on a slightly larger pattern I had been using for a while, I wanted a bear that would sit without toppling over, feel 'real' in your hand and above all have a cute, basic teddy bear face. I decided to use viscose because I love working with it and I love the worn feel it gives to a bear. I LOVE the feel of a very heavy bear, particularly in a small bear ( I love to see peoples faces when they pick my bears up and go oooh its heavy!!) and above all, I wanted a bear that people would instantly recognise as mine.

Each bear is created from the same mini pattern, (although they all look different) cut from quality materials and hand sewn using good quality thread. My bears faces have good quality black glass eyes and their faces are stitched with linen thread. The bears are all five times jointed using cotter pin joints, which means their head and limbs move. They are lightly filled with polyfill and heavily weighted with steel shot. Each bear has a certificate which shows the edition of the bear (almost always edition 1 of 1) and the bears name and his/her date of birth (the day they were finished).
I am very critical of my own work and strive to create the best bear I can each and every time.

I am never 100% happy with the bears I create, but that pushes me to create an even better bear the next time. I will always make bears and I always dream of doing it full-time :)

In 2017 I created a new bear - a smaller bear! this little character is 3.5", with a big fat heavy tummy and very cute short small limbs. He has a slightly oversized head to give plenty room to create a super cute face. This year I am using all vegan materials. I hope you love my little bears as much as I love creating them.
