Alphabets, Skylines and Puns...

I was born in Liverpool in early 1980. In July 1981, as Charles and Diana tied the knot and the Toxteth riots sent shockwaves through Merseyside, my parents moved out of the city. As a result I grew on the fringes of the Cumbrian Lake District with my three younger brothers, later joined by my little sister. My early childhood was full of mud, worms and animals! I was never destined to be a girly girl.

I went to art college in Carlisle, and then on to John Moores University in Liverpool. I studied Graphic Arts and Illustration. I enjoyed it, but on my graduation I chose a different career path for a number of years. I moved to Oxford and then to Reading, back to Liverpool and then to Lancashire, before eventually coming back to Liverpool for yes, a fourth time!

In 2009 I began to draw again. Initially I'd been helping my younger sister with some homework, I then rediscovered my passion for drawing. I drew my house, followed by a friend's house, and another friend's house... it became a bit of an obsession. I then discovered that people were willing to pay for my pictures and I haven't looked back since!

I created a range of illustrated alphabets - inspired in no small part by a trip to visit my cousins in Australia where I discovered the game "Scattergories". I loved the idea of thinking of a word beginning with a certain letter to fit within a particular theme. I currently have around twenty-five different themed alphabet images (some better than others). This collection is constantly growing and I often ask for help via my Social media.

Just after Christmas 2013, I created my "Cheesy Valentine" card. It went on to be a huge bestseller across the various websites that I sell through; and is now available as a Birthday, Anniversary, Mother's Day and Father's Day card too. February 2014 was the busiest I had ever been. The card continues to be a bestseller.

As a direct result, in March 2014 I gave up my day job and I am now a full time illustrator. I work from my lovely studio space in Liverpool City Centre, just a few streets away from where I studied at University over twenty years ago.

My latest project is a series of skyline illustrations - using information provided on social media by people who know and love each city, to give a contemporary and all-encompassing shortlist of landmarks. I then condense the landmarks into a single line drawing, each with it's own quirky character. My personal favourites so far include Bristol, Lincoln and of course my hometown, Liverpool.

I also now have another Etsy shopfront - www.etsy.com/shop/makeandflourish - specialising in small business support, tutorials and reviews. If you're an Etsy seller then pop over and have a look.

Frequently asked questions
Can you offer me a discount?

I don’t offer discounts on request; any current offers are displayed in my shop. My prices are all carefully calculated to allow for materials, postage, taxes, overheads, commission and the time it takes me to create each item (especially when it comes to personalised products). As such, prices are not negotiable.
If you are a returning customer, you will have been emailed a "returning customer" discount code after placing your original order.

Can you draw a new skyline for me?

I won’t draw skylines based on a single request; each skyline takes several days to research, plan and draw. I’m always happy to listen to any suggestions, and if I get a few suggestions for the same place I’ll add it to my list of skylines to draw. However I need to be sure there’s a definite demand for each skyline before I invest the time in drawing it.
Please do double check I've not already drawn the skyline you are looking for - just use the "search" function in my shop.

Can you handwrite my card and send it directly to the recipent for me?

Absolutely! Just choose the card you want, add this to your basket, and then add this listing too - https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/125294142/handwritten-send-direct-any-becka. Make sure you have updated the delivery name and address too.
