About

Beenznrice Art

Beenznrice started at Otis College of Art and Design in 2001. They both were in the Illustration program and had nearly every class together. Carlos and Naomi became best friends and then realized they were soul mates. Carlos is the Beenz (he's Mexican-American with some Brazilian blood in there, too) and Naomi makes up the Rice (she's a mix of Filipino, Japanese, and Caucasian). They've been creating their art and graphic design ever since. Three kids later, expression is extremely important in their family, and they raise their kids to be creative critical thinkers. The Beenznrice family is passionate about art, writing, being healthy, and growing and cooking organic food!

Individual bios:

Naomi Valdivia is truly a Southern California artist, raised in Carson, CA, went to highschool in Hollywood at Fairfax Visual Arts Magnet, and college finishing with a BFA in Illustration from Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. She currently is a Graphic Designer and freelance Illustrator in Camarillo, CA. Her style is influenced by meshing cultures, as she is a living, breathing mesh of cultures herself-specifically half Filipino, a quarter Japanese, and a quarter Caucasian, and within those ethnicities, are countless mixtures. Her work is both traditional and digital, mixing pencil drawing, the clean vector quality of Illustrator and the many painterly possibilities of Photoshop. She tends to mix religious, historical and cultural elements in her work. She likes the idea of mixing something that is beautiful with something that is seen as morbid-therefore creating its own haunting and thought provoking beauty.

Carlos Valdivia was born in Monterey Park, CA and grew up in East Los Angeles, Inglewood, CA and Simi Valley, CA. Growing up in such different parts of Southern California has made him the artist he is today. He earned his BFA from Otis College of Art and Design in Communication Arts with a main focus on Illustration. Influences include Frank Frazetta, Massimiliano Frezzato, Jim Lee and Rembrandt, in addition to all the great present day artists who are too numerous to name in one paragraph. His biggest interest when it comes to art is learning something new, everyday, whether it be in illustration, graphic design, packaging design or anywhere in between. Carlos is never content to use one art formula too long, or to be stagnant in one style, otherwise his brain literally starts to hurt.
