How a Bee turns a bad situation into a beautiful life...
In March of 2011, I started suffering from debilitating back pain. It was so bad that I had to stop working. I have never suffered with back pain, so I was sure there would be an easy diagnosis and I would be back on my feet in no time. A few months later, I was diagnosed with multiple herniated discs. A year after first experiencing pain, I received a diagnosis of symptomatic Tarlov cysts in my spinal column. It has been a long and painful journey, with a possibility of being a condition that I have to live with for the rest of my life.
Well, I am not one to sit around and let my life be determined for me! I am a forward-thinker with a serious need for creative outlets! I was a Commercial Photography major in college, if that says anything. After a few months of total rest and relaxation, I started painting anything that you put in front of me. Using mostly acrylic paints, I painted many canvases, rocks, plastic containers, photo frames… you name it. I moved from paint to working with beads. Beaded bracelets, ornaments, you get the picture. I tried my hand at dyeing fabric and went back to the sewing roots of my childhood for throw pillow and table covers. And then… I remembered that big box of yarn that I had patiently waiting for me in the top of my spare closet.
I learned how to crochet in 2010. I was introduced to a group of elderly women that gave me some yarn and a crochet hook and taught me the two most basic crochet stitches. I used those two stitches over and over again to make scarves for my friends and family, but then got swept up with life and put all of my yarn away for another day. After exhausting all other creative outlets, I started to crochet again. I made another scarf. Scarves are amazing and really serve a purpose, but they can get quite boring for the scarf maker. I started searching for YouTube video tutorials and after watching a few, I was able to figure out a ton of new stitches AND started learning how to read a pattern. There are countless free patterns on the internet, but they all looked like Egyptian hieroglyphics to me at that time! Once I mastered pattern-reading, I was all set!
Initially, I just made items for myself, for entertainment and to keep testing my brain. It wasn’t until the overwhelming response that I got from friends and family, which encouraged me to take my crochet goods online and try my hand at business ownership. And this is how I found you, Etsy! I immediately fell in love with this site and all of its users! I opened my store in April of 2012, and I have been buzzing along with it ever since!
See you around! Bzzzzt!
