Hello, pumpkins, and welcome to the home of creative pandemonium. I never know what I'll be making from week to week, but I can guarantee that it'll all show up here. If you like OOAK jewelry, quirky plush dolls, or cuddly knitted and crocheted items, you've come to the right place!
"Wait...people will pay me to make Stuff™? Whoa..."
I have to start this out with a confession -- I'm not a full time jewelry designer. In fact, my day job is writing, and if you head over to www.melaniefletcher.com you can check out my bibliography. That being said, I was cleaning my craft room in October 2011 when I pulled out a huge drawer full of various beads, findings, et al all jumbled together, and thought, "Hmm, I should clean this out and arrange everything neatly. Oh, wait, I bought these beads for a bracelet -- I'll make that first." Because procrastination is my middle name.
See, I liked making what i called helix bracelets -- long, slender double-stranded wrap bracelets that you could wrap around your wrist, drape around your neck, or even use as a belt if you had a tiny waist. I proceeded to make a helix bracelet in NOLA colors and gave it to a friend, made another one in red glass for myself, then made a nifty little "blood drop" necklace and gave it to my niece. At which point Niece said, "This is gorgeous -- you should be selling these, Auntie Mel!"
I thought about it, and realized how much I really do enjoy making stuff, so I decided to try my luck on Etsy. I started out with a handful of helix bracelets and earrings, and those sold well. I then branched out into steampunk designs, as well as a line of fandom-oriented jewelry, and rounded up the store with funky faux fur crocheted caps and my line of Booze Fairy plush dolls.
And here I am, a year later, with a most beloved clientele and a whole new set of artisan skills. Who'd have thunk it?
