How We Started Our Art

(Skip Down to Starting the Shop if that is your interest.)

A little over 10 years ago my husband asked me to take a tole painting class so I could add highlights to a few pieces of his scroll saw work. I wasn't very enthused about it, as I wasn't very artistic at the time, but I started the class. I was the only beginner in the class so those first projects were very difficult for me. The teacher was great though, and after a few months I was asking my husband to cut things out for me to paint.

I painted my first gourd in that class and I grew to love gourd crafting so much that I've grown them in my garden ever since. Sometimes a gourd will "speak" to me and I know what I want to make it into when I first see it, but at other times I'll get ideas from something that happens. For instance, the idea for my "Shards" jewelry came from a gourd that fell off of my table and broke to pieces on one side, but was still perfect on the other side.

My son has been helping me with gourds since he was a toddler. I have a picture of him helping me plant seeds in peat pots. He helps me clean gourds now and he's a great source of ideas. Children don't limit their thinking to what they think is possible.

My husband, Brent started scrollsawing when I purchased a Sears scollsaw for him for our first wedding anniversary. That was almost 20 years ago. That little $150 saw cut a lot of wood for him and when he moved on to his next scrollsaw, a DeWalt, he could tell a big difference. That one didn't last very long because his shop was flooded and entirely under water when Hurrican Ike storms hit our area. His DeWalt was the only thing that was ruined, and I credit a local woodworking store in helping us save most of his other tools with advising us how to clean the water and mud off them.

Welcome to Benlynn's Treasures. Benlynns is a mother/son shop with some help from dad once in awhile.

Ben started this when he was 8 years old and he loves to make things. He has helped plant the gourds I sell in the shop as well as clean and basecoat them. He recently started adding his zentangle art. I'm Lynnetta and I do the painting and gourd crafting.

Brent does all of the woodworking for the shop. Sometimes he spends hours in the basement working on scroll saw projects. He's also my "go to" person when I have an idea of something I want cut out to paint, but there isn't a pattern.
