For as long as I can remember, I have been a maker. In fact, I was making before people were even called makers! Or at least the current-day iteration of "maker." Put me in front of some fabrics, fibers, and my trusty Bernina machine, and I am in the zone. I begin to create, there is a dizzying array of colors and patterns and the ideas start coming... I sew, quilt, knit and crochet. And I embroider. As a young girl I used to hand embroider, proudly learning all the stitches as I went. When I discovered machine embroidery, It. Was. On.

I began to look for unique ideas. My first stop was the built-in designs that came with my machine. Some practical, but mostly they seemed dated. I spent time online and often came away with the same impression - these designs are dated (even the websites seemed of another time).

After searching and searching, I decided I would create my own designs. I began a self-education in the field of digitizing - creating designs with software. This was my groove. I've worked professionally in communications for years, and know a lot about design principles, illustration software and general computer practice. I turned to Bernina for their very comprehensive software program (note to Bernina: how about a Mac version??? Graphic design cries out for the Mac operating system).

The learning curve was steep, and my early designs were pretty awful. I learned about bulletproof designs (so thread-heavy and dense the design becomes rigid). I struggled - until one day it clicked - to understand pull compensation. I researched best practices for techniques and products. I purchased some designs on Etsy. Some were really well done, and others... well, appeared to have been done with the "auto digitize" function of the software. It was apparent to me the difference thoughtful, quality design could make.

I was so thrilled to be able to create my own designs. No longer stuck in the dusty attic of embroidery designs past. Freeing! I'd thought of opening an Etsy shop to showcase my work, and in the summer of 2020, stuck at home due to the COVID pandemic, it was time to turn my ideas into reality.

And so, in the dining room of my home in a quintessential Southern university town, surrounded by my kids, my husband, two dogs and two cats, my computer and my Bernina, Bespoke Needle came into being. I cannot get my ideas out quickly enough.
