Announcement   LAST CHANCE CLEARANCE SALE! After being gone for over 3 years overseas, I have decided to temporarily re-open my store for one last clearance event, with everything being on sale. I am most likely not going to continue my taxidermy designs, so these are a lot of last chance items. Everything has been stored in pristine condition and I have verified myself that all items are in great shape. Sales are final and I am only shipping orders domestically in the US. This is your last chance to pick up any items you have had your eye on!

Welcome to my studio of taxidermy jewelry, fashion, and art! My work is all about having a little fun with fashion in a dark, but beautiful, way. My shop got it's name because a "Bête Noire" is a person or thing strongly detested or avoided, and even literally means "black beast" in French- which fits with the themes of my work! Except I try to make them just a little less detestable, and a little more desirable. With each piece I aim to create something that is delicate and glamorous, mysteriously twisted, and sometimes a little of both!

I also have recently re-opened my shop for my artwork and dolls! Check it out at:

About

The Playfully Dark Side of Art and Fashion

Each piece that I create has a story to tell, a feeling to capture, and is never boring or one-sided. A core philosophy behind my works is finding a balance of opposites. Natural + Industrial. Morbid+ Sweet. Dainty + Bold. A piece will never simply be "cute" or "creepy"; it will always have at least a little something to counter it's main theme. Things of a dark and macabre nature interest me, and I enjoy being able to take that essence and find beauty in it. I mix the natural with the unnatural, and sometimes the supernatural elements of the world as well. It is through these deeply thought out layers of character that my "tongue in cheek" view on the world is interpreted and the fantasies of my imagination are brought to life.

In terms of materials, I view my use of taxidermy materials as a form of recycling and bringing new life to pieces, a reflection of taxidermy couture's motto, "Memento Mori" meaning, "remeber you must die one day too". Instead of seeing death as dark and gloomy,my pieces reflect the natural cycle of life and see the lighter side. A big part of my core philosophy is making sure the pieces I use in my work did not come from anything killed for it's sake. I have a lifetime of love and respect for nature and it's creatures, which is why a portion of proceeds from Bete Noire also go to the World Wildlife Foundation.

* I also own another etsy store, saijanide.etsy.com, that features some of my original artwork! When I am not crafting, I am painting....or maybe playing video games.

  • Saija Salminiitty Cleary

Owner, Maker, Designer, Curator, Shipping, Packaging

Hello and welcome to my store! Ever since I was a child I have had a penchant for art and weirdness.....I have never been able to outgrow my inner Wednesday Addams! My specialty has always been finding the beauty in the darker side of things in life.

  • Nathan Cleary

Husband, Main Advisor, Manager Of Moral Support, Bodyguard

My shop wouldn't have been possible without the love and support of my husband; he is a crucial part of the behind-the-scenes team! Not only does he put up with my own personal mini natural history museum, but we share ideas and he gives me input.

  • Hiisi

Cat, Creative Director, Maker Of Mischief

Hiisi is the creative director, although he is barred from the studio space (this is the result of recurring allegations of materials theft, especially things in tiny ziplock bags). His other skills include purrs, sneak attacks, and mastery of naps.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: All sales made from Nov 22nd- Dec 2nd 2013 will be final sales- no returns or refunds! The ongoing sale is a final store closeout sale. I am only shipping orders domestically in the US, and shipping will include insurance through USPS. These changes are due to the fact that my store will be closing for 3+ years beginning Dec. 3rd.

I really wish to provide all my buyers with great customer service and satisfaction, and I pride myself on trying to be fair in any cases where problems arise. I am more than happy to discuss ideas and individual concerns! Under some circumstances I may be able to provide rush orders or special shipping depending on your needs. Please understand that this is also my business, and I cannot offer refunds or returns on used goods, as well as custom made items on a case-by-case basis.

INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS, PLEASE NOTE! I am not liable for problems with orders arising from the customs policies regarding international orders; it is your responsibility to find out if my pieces can be shipped to your country of residence. I am not liable for pieces that are confiscated due to customs policies of your country, and do not offer refunds if pieces are confiscated. This is not usually a problem, however please make sure ahead of time before placing an order to avoid any problems. If you really love a piece, but want to make sure it is ok to ship to you, I have no problem putting it on reserve for you as long as you contact me about it.

Thank you!

Payment
I now accept direct checkout (etsy's debit/credit card payment system) as well as paypal.
(You don't have to have a paypal account to checkout with paypal- you can use your debit/credit card! Here is an etsy article to explain: http://www.etsy.com/help/article/361)

I can only ship items after payment has cleared and gone through.
Shipping
Most items will ship with USPS priority mail which takes 2-3 business days domestically and 6-10 days internationally. Unfortunately, I have found that international shipping sometimes does take quite a bit longer for pieces to arrive; if your item does not arrive straight away, please contact me via etsy but also be patient as items do tend to show up, albeit a little late. As mentioned earlier in my policies, I am not liable for problems arising from customs regulations.

I use USPS to ship my items; I try to ship regular orders within 2 business days (not including Sundays or holidays, when the post office is closed). Orders received during the weekend may be shipped on that following Monday, since the post office closes early on Saturday and is closed on Sundays. Custom orders would be similarly shipped once they are finished.

All orders over $50 will be insured, and by default I ship with priority mail unless specifically asked to use a different method.

For any special shipping not mentioned above, contact me ahead of time!
Refunds and Exchanges
IMPORTANT NOTICE: All sales made from Nov 22nd- Dec 2nd 2013 will be final sales- no returns or refunds! The ongoing sale is a final store closeout sale. I am only shipping orders domestically in the US, and shipping will include insurance through USPS. These changes are due to the fact that my store will be closing for 3+ years beginning Dec. 3rd.

I do not offer returns or refunds unless an item is grossly misrepresented - and I do my best to insure that my listings are completely accurate. If you are unhappy with your item for some reason, please contact me.

In the case that an item is damaged upon arrival, I purchase insurance for all my dolls and original art when they are shipped. If an item is damaged en route, this insurance will cover that. If an item is damaged, contact me as well, and I can see if there is anything I can do to fix it.

In cases of refunds, I do not refund shipping charges or pay return shipping.
Additional policies and FAQs
Most of my work is one-of-a-kind, however I may be able to replicate designs with only small differences and am open to working with boutiques doing wholesale or consignment business. If you are interested, DEFINITELY contact me here on etsy or through my email betenoirebysaija [!at] gmail.com. I may be able to come up with exclusive designs just for your store only ;)
