It all started with "I bet I could make that"...

A little background on me...

I have always loved art. After graduating from high school, I attended Cal State Fullerton and received my degree in Fine Arts, with an emphasis in Illustration. I soon found a job as a graphic designer with a large company, where I worked for 11 years.
In Fall of 2009, I came across a pretty neat idea... recycled bottle caps, turned into art in the form of charms. Always looking to scratch that creative itch, I had to try it out. There was quite a bit of trial and error, including a trip to the ER after I drilled a hole in and out of my left index finger... not one of my finer moments! But, time has passed, I've refined the process and am still learning new tricks as I go.
I really love what I do and am so excited to see where it takes me. I am really hoping this is just the beginning!

"So, Erika... how did you come up with the name Betsy's Drawers?" Well.... let's go back a a few years. I met my husband, got married, had a beautiful son and one year later had a gorgeous little girl we named Elizabeth. Being that our son was just a 1 year old with a limited vocabulary, he re-named her "Betts" and the name has stuck with her since. That following Christmas, my husband gave me THE BEST gift... a sewing machine! And boy, did I put that baby to work! Eventually, friends were ordering outfits and blankets, bibs and burp cloths... it was turning into a little business! But what's a business without a name? Being that my fabrics of choice were vintage inspired, I wanted a vintage theme. I also wanted to incorporate my daughter's name, as well. And then it came to me... Betsy's Drawers. It was vintage, a derivative of her name and a fun play on words, in regards to clothing. And so it began. I sewed and sewed and sewed until I became pregnant with identical twins.... surprise! I put Betsy's Drawers on the shelf for a while. And then the unthinkable happened. We lost our little boys to Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome at almost 7 months along. Sadly, 2 years later we went on to lose another son almost 6 months into our pregnancy. It was, and still is, a long road, but we picked ourselves up and dusted ourselves off.
It was later that summer, in 2009, that I got an incredible itch to "create" something.... and that something was custom photo bottle cap jewelry. After being approached with requests and custom orders, I took the Betsy's Drawers name back off that dusty shelf, as it had become such a big part of me and already had made a small name for itself. So, there it is... a long winded answer to a very simple question!

Thanks for reading and I hope to talk with you in person sometime, soon! Erika
