The M.A.D. House Artists (M.om A.nd D.ad), The Grand Lake Artistic Chaos Foundation
THE M.A.D. HOUSE ARTISTS
Our home was built as an artists place, where each of us may pursue his or her peculiar talent. When first envisioned, Grandma was needing to be diverted and her special needs were addressed, making our facility particularly well suited for the handicapped, sporting special steps throughout the grounds designed for wheeled chairs, and an elevator between floors at the main house. Our rural setting provides inspiration for the artist in each of us. The M.A.D. House Artists are in Oklahoma on Grand Lake of The Cherokees.
The SHIRE event is held in the Library of the main house. Dennis reads to us from our many books of short stories. He is terriffic. Sunday Afternoon at 3:00 P.M. Dad reads for us from his choice of books. As Dad tends to lean towards the Fantasy genre, which is delightful, we call this event The Shire in honor of some of our favorite fantasy books. Come Sunday afternoon for a live performance to rival any we have heard in books on tape.
Also at the Shire, Tuesday morning and early afternoon are set aside for painting and sculpting in an Art Workshop with Mom.
In our dance studio we have monthly public dances, everything from Classical East Indian Dance to English Country Dance. Saturday 11:00 A.M. classes are held for exercise, breathing and stretching, along with dance for enjoyment. Our monthly social dancing is fun and no one needs any previous experience. Everyone from grandparents to very small children have joined us and no one has had to be left out of the dancing.
When Mom was searching for a phrase to describe all the activities and disciplines represented just between the four of us, she asked our son to write a brief description of what we do here at The M.A.D. House Artists. He mentioned that we are patrons of the arts, but Mom countered that we participate as much as possible as well. He then pointed out that we needed a description that stated that we are "participants in the arts," and "almost random." His spontaneous suggestion was so exactly right that after Mom stopped laughing we adopted it at once. Though we are not incorporated as a foundation. We immediately became
The Grand Lake Artistic Chaos Foundation
and so we remain (Thank you, Kimball!)
Welcome to The M.A.D. House Artists!
We also have an online book store:
The M.A.D. House Artists is an artists place in Oklahoma. Located on the shores of Grand Lake, we offer an environment for artists of all interests to pursue their bliss. The basis of our book collection was inherited from reading grandparents, parents and the present generation of avid readers and collectors of wonderful books.
Twenty years ago our interests were focused on finding rare books on obscure subjects as the mood hit us. Then one day we went to the local library sale. We had noticed our favorite books disappearing from the shelves. From that first library sale in 1991, we came home with $72 in ten-cent books. As the libraries disappear and downsize, we have even found ourselves diving into dumpsters to rescue the printed word from obliteration. One late night frantic call from friends of a nearby library yielded 1500 books callously discarded by, believe it or not, the librarian. It has become our crusade to make these precious objects, scheduled for shredding and for the landfill, available to the readers who have loved them. Many of our books are marked 'withdrawn', but many more were clean donations which did not even make it to the library shelves. Recent acquisitions include a number of very nice first editions from fiction writers, a large number of golfing tomes, scientific works, biographies of people from many different walks of life, children's books and some lovely old romance novels from the 1950s.
It is the purpose of books.themadhouseartists.com to make available all these books: real books, old books, new books, well-worn and well-loved books, beautiful books, ugly books, books in demand and books people have forgotten. Our online book selling began in 2005, but our interest in reading, collecting beautiful books, encouraging writers and promoting the printed word goes back several generations.
At our home website, themadhouseartists.com we have pages telling about writers of our acquaintance who are currently writing and publishing books, dancers, graphic artists, fabric artists, musicians, our adventures at gardening, our many and varied pets (llamas to lizards) and other subjects of interest. Please be our welcome guests.
We at books.themadhouseartists.com hope our selection of books is pleasing to your heart, and that you will visit again and share with us a love of reading.

Frequently asked questions
Custom and personalized orders
Custom orders are my delight and specialty. When you make a custom order, we will discuss the design and purpose at length. In the case of the Wizard of Fairy (or walking) Staffs, I encourage a customer to send any items they would like to see included in the design or construction. I also take orders for ceramics and costumes. If you can design it or describe it, as a theatre craftsperson I can probably realise it to your satisfaction.
Sizing details
In costuming, measurements are important. It helps if you are able to send accurate measurements. I can supply a list of measurements for you to take and descriptions on how to take accurate measurements.
Care instructions
In giving advice on how to care for your purchase, I am afraid I am like a mother hen - When the item is shipped, it will come with extensive instructions not only on how to care for it, but how to unwrap it and set it up. If any questions come up, I am always here and eager to try and answer them. I apologise in advance for hovering. You know how mothers are....
Gift wrapping and packaging
I would be delighted to gift-wrap your purchase and include your message with it.
Items from our shop are packed with care - to the Nth degree. The challenge usually comes in the unpacking. Directions and suggestions are always included with the items for which this may be an issue.
Wholesale availability
I will consider wholesale. I am a one-woman operation, and in most cases am already offering you the wholesale prices here at Etsy. If wholesale is to be a consideration, then we may need to discuss a number of situations which may involve me hiring additional help - and for you, that may prove not to be cost-effective. My work is very carefully done and I am not particularly speedy. If an item is listed as available immediately, I will ship the next day. If you are ordering custom or wholesale, we will need to discuss a ship date and agree on the practicality of that. Some things can be rushed, others, like ceramics, cannot.
