And yet another addition to my Bibliographica collection. These journals are AMAZING. Louise is an incredible artist and these journals are made with time consuming love and skill. She's honestly a genius when it comes to book making. I love holding them in my hands...and writing in them..such a treat! Thank you, Louise, for yet another gem! <3 <3

From Craft to Craft

Hi, I'm Louise - the sole creator of Bibliographica. I am based on the west coast of Auckland, New Zealand.

Bibliographica was born out of my love of many things. I have always had a passion for books, old ones in particular. Being an avid journal writer, I've kept a journal since I was 12 years old. I would decorate them, stick things in them and write screeds.

Over the years I began to seek out a certain look of a journal to use, and the right pen - it all had to come together in a certain way and I found it difficult to locate exactly what I wanted.

During the four years I spent at University in Australia studying photography, I began to make rudimentary books to use as workbooks, to tell my photographic stories and keep records of my work. My time was spent largely in the darkroom, engaged in developing & processing my black and white films. I loved to experiment with different processes, surfaces & papers to print my work. What fascinated me most was that there was an endless amount of ways one could tell a story with a photograph.

Once you had a clean negative, your ways to depict what was within the frame were limitless, and most of all - the story would alter as a result. I could leave it black and white and clean cut - or I could print it on crumpled paper and sepia tone it - tear the edges and so on... the end result was different.

This way of working has clearly filtered through into my books. I find myself navigating to hand-tearing paper, staining it brown to look old, and creating an olde worldly house for the page protectors.

In theory, I have only taken a couple of short evening courses in bookbinding which accumulated merely several hours of study over a few weeks. Aside from that, I am a self taught binder.

I love to break the boundaries of traditional bookbinding. It always interests me greatly to see what one finds themselves capable of, when presented with a journal in which to write, which differs from the conventional store bought book. I hope that my books inspire people, in some way or another, to connect with that writer or artist within.

What began as a hobby became a necessity. Through book-binding I find I can use my creative energy in a variety of ways, and challenge myself with the materials at hand. I think of my work as incomplete - the recipient does the rest.

Thank you for stopping by Bibliographica, where you can find unique hand bound books & wearable books. Each creation I make is one of a kind. In my creative process, I use recycled & reclaimed leathers, vintage & antique fabrics and high quality artist papers. All books are bound with quality Irish linen thread. They are strong, and will stand the test of time. My studio practice is slow, and I put my heart & soul into each book I create, giving each one its own personality.
