If you are a dreamer, come in!
I love art - art of ALL kinds. I have a craft room piled high with materials for different arts - tile/mosaic, beadwork, quilting, oil and acrylic paints... I have done it all.
But when I finally got a chance to work with clay, I knew I was into something big. Clay was the first art medium I ever used that just FELT right. I don't want to say there was no learning curve - I've been learning and being challenged every single day I hit the studio. But I felt a natural connection with this raw mud that I haven't felt before. I have been a painter, a mosaic artist, a jewelry maker - but I think I am a potter to stay.
For me, clay offers the perfect combination of unlimited creative potential and a need for patience and thoughtful response. I find I must LISTEN to the clay, whether on the wheel or under my fingers while sculpting. Failure to listen usually means failure of the piece.
The cool touch of clay beneath my fingers lifts my spirit and frees my inner child - and I hope that my pieces give a glimpse of that whimsical wonder to my customers. Mud Pie Pottery isn't for everyone, but it might be fore you! Let me leave you with an invitation by Shel Silverstein:
“If you are a dreamer come in
If you are a dreamer a wisher a liar
A hoper a pray-er a magic-bean-buyer
If youre a pretender com sit by my fire
For we have some flax golden tales to spin
When I was a little girl, I loved to play in the mud. Now that I am an "adult," I still love to play in the mud. There is something about clay that frees the spirit. It speaks to the child that still lives inside me. In my life, clay = play.
Mud Pie Pottery owner Kate Bertin is a mother, teacher, pet lover and artist. She sees the whimsical in everyday life, and loves the idea of bringing a touch of whimsy into others' lives.
Kate's pottery is thrown on a Lockerbie kick wheel (she loves the feeling of throwing clay without using electricity.) The mugs are individually sculpted, and every one is unique. All glazes are lead-free and food-safe.
