I cannot say enough good things about this company. Adrienne and Jeff worked so hard to get me exactly what I needed for my sister's wedding - a 'grow old together' bench w/ her and her husband's initials burnt into the back. It brought tears to my sister's eyes it was so beautiful. Adrienne/Jeff even followed up with history about the wood and care instructions post-sale. I will absolutely buy from them again.

This one is going to be a beauty, a bit of a transition piece for us. Maybe both harbinger and return. Tabletop from mahogany boards meant for restoring midcentury chris-craft hulls. Steel chevron legs coming together. For a cozy room with cushioned seats
Early early on, but this cold rolled square bar will one day soon come together, be an open bar

About

small shop, meticulous craft. calibrated for sanctuary at home

At birdloft, we create sustainable modern designs from wood, steel and air.

The wood is almost exclusively reclaimed old growth fir, salvaged from deconstructed barns and warehouses in Seattle, Tacoma and the Puget Sound environs. The wood is from the same ancient Pacific Northwest forest that provided industrial-scaled building material for the rest of the country from the 1850s to the 1990s. For the most part, the old growth forest is gone (although some awe-inspiring remnants can be found in parks and preserves) and is irreplaceable in today's lumber economy of roughly forty-year cycles, so we have to make as best use we can of what we have. And really, there is nothing like old-growth wood. Nothing comes close to it for its depth of tone and patina, its heft, its grain and warmth.

The sourced steel, for its part, is estimated at 89.5 percent recycled content, about three times the recycled content as much of the steel commercially available in this country.

And the part about the air - every piece of birdloft furniture is meant to breathe, to compose a small amount of space in a given room, help create sanctuary at home.

So our job - in our craft and sullen Pacific Northwest art - is mostly to reveal what's already there, to bring some clarity and breadth to the narrative in the wood - what an architect might term a minimal intervention. It's mostly about not doing too much, working with the wood to create a maximum content palimpsest.

In this work, we're calling on our experience working for studio furniture masters, architects who have seen too much and designers far hipper than us. We're also calling on our own work as architectural designers and builders. Jeff, for his part, is calling on his days at sea, lobstering - tenth generation Mainer - when words were luxuries rarely used, wood was about trapping crustaceans and the snow never landed, just turned the salt water into brushed metal. (Adrienne, will be adding her part here soon!)

Often, we carefully break the rules we were taught and faithfully learned.

And just to say, at birdloft, we do everything we can to work in an environmentally sustainable way. From initial salvage operations (proudly carried out in Yellow Truck, the biodiesel miser at 40mpg) to packing and shipping (reusing heavy duty recycled cardboard and pallet material for crating), to the wind powering our website, the goal is minimum consumption of new material and maximum reuse.

Let us design something for your home landscape. We'll keep it light. Make it beautiful.

At birdloft we create sustainable modern designs from wood, steel and air. A small shop practicing meticulous craft. All of it calibrated toward sanctuary at home.

Our raw materials are responsibly sourced. All the wood is reclaimed, meaning its salvaged for reuse from old barns and warehouses in Seattle, Tacoma and the greater Puget Sound environs. The sourced steel has the highest recycled content available, estimated at 89.5 percent, which is roughly three times the recycled content as much of the steel available on the commercial market.

The designs of the furniture are adaptable. Nearly each piece that comes out of the shop these days has been custom built to work perfectly in one home. The materials themselves, the wood especially, is unrepeatable. Each slab and board has been shaped, winnowed and deepened by time and the particular elements of place. Each is its own. In your home, in renewed form, time starts again.

Let me know how birdloft can become a part of your home landscape.

Thank you,

Jeff & Adrienne

Please be aware that all sales are final. At this time birdloft does not offer refunds or exchanges. Please weigh your decision before purchasing. Please reference, too, the reviews of customers who have already made the leap, and landed happily, in the Reviews section. Other technical details: orders may not be canceled and deposits may not be refunded due to delivery outside normal production schedules. Slight variations in wood grain and coloration are natural and birdloft is not responsible for such variations within a reasonable range. The natural qualities of your furniture may vary slightly from samples provided, but will be within a range deemed by us to be acceptable. birdloft is not responsible for appropriate delivery access at any client site and will give no refunds if this occurs. In addition, delivery and storage fees will be charged if any furniture is required to be brought back to the workshop.
Shipping
Shipping is typically by FedEx Ground. In all cases, the furniture is insured for the purchase price, and orders valued over $500 require a signature for the driver to leave them. If that is the case for your order, please email us a good phone number so that the delivery driver may coordinate with you. I'll provide a tracking number as soon as I have it. Last, I re-use recycled heavy duty cardboard when packaging and crating furniture, so while unpacking your furniture, you will no doubt see a panoply of logos, most often bicycle related.
