ART +/- SCIENCE

I'm a scientist and an artist, which a lot of people think is counter intuitive. Surely art is all about touchy feelings and science is cold empiricism? But both art and science require the ability to solve problems and to see the world in new ways and to come up with new ideas and to experiment.

My art is not inspired by my research; my research mostly involves developing statistical models and analyzing data and I'm not that kind of artist. Rather, both my art and my research are inspired by curiosity about the world, both the natural world, and the world I create.

PAPER CUTTING: I draw inspiration from the natural world, from Chinese ink painting and Japanese woodcuts. My paper cuts are all done by hand on card paper- they're two to ten layers deep.

SHADOW BOXES: are just me wondering what would happen if I took a layered paper cutting and separated the layers. It's hard because I have to cut little pieces of cardboard and tape them in between (some people use extra layers of glass I've heard) and make sure that the layers underneath won't get obscured

INSECT DISPLAYS: I got a whole bunch of lonely dead insects from some old (not scientifically valuable) collections at my school. I try to bring out the beauty of the insects with the shapes and colors of the paper

PAINTED STENCILS: so then I started cutting plastic instead of paper, and then I was like 'what if this was a shirt?' I really like painted stencils, which is my way of saying a stencil but not all the same color, where the sponging technique creates a unique texture. I think it's a little different and unique.

SPRAYED STENCILS: but you can also just do spray paint- if your windows are open.

I'm a phD student in entomology, prefer art that's made using blades, and think the best clothes are ones that have cool organisms on them. I love coming up with weird new ideas and seeing if I can make them work.
