About

Bits & blurbs of this & that!

I am a crafty lady who loves to thrift and upcycle!! "Waste not, want not" is a mantra I live by, for reasons creative, economical and ethical - I rarely buy new things because I don't want to support shady business practices and fast fashion. My shop, from product to packaging, is a manifestation of this, as well as an outlet for me to make stuff and be resourceful, scrappy and a bit of an anarchist <3

I grew up in a small suburb with very little exposure to diversity and subcultures; I was interested in fashion but had a lot of trouble finding clothes that "felt" right. When I moved to Long Beach for college in 2006, I ended up running with a bunch of punks and ravers. It was during this time that I first started browsing Etsy and learning about "upcycling"; I'd always had an environmentalist streak and was instantly inspired by this notion of repurposing. Suddenly I found myself cutting up and/or dyeing any t-shirt I could get my hands on, covering my clothes with strange handmade patches and making glow-in-the-dark kandi for dorm homies in their favorite colors - I didn't even go to raves, I just liked making stuff, and quickly became KNOWN as a girl who (1) wore funky altered clothes and (2) made stuff for her friends. I opened my Etsy shop in 2008, hoping to put all the "bits and blurbs" of scrap material I'd accumulated to good use. By then, I had upgraded from kandi to colorful t-shirt headbands and wrap bracelets, and these quickly became primary sellers in my store.

At some point in this journey I became quite fascinated with dystopia-inspired fashion - maybe it's because I was wandering around Long Beach barefoot wearing crazily-stitched hand-me-downs! Thus, distressed and deconstructed pieces gradually made their way into the shop and now "post apocalyptic" is a consistent BitsandBlurbs theme! I aim to design pieces for everyday wear or to add depth to something more elaborate... I don't generally have the wherewithal to go all-out where cosplay/costumes are concerned and thus have empathy for folks looking to explore not-so-mainstream fashion on a budget!

Finally, I also really love the quality and style of vintage and always have a little retro fun in the shop for my fellow treasure hunters. I like to think of BitsandBlurbs as a colorful outpost for wayward hippies, punks, wastelanders and weirdos :D

In closing, scavenge, buy handmade and/or make stuff yourself! DON'T LET THE MAN TELL YOU WHAT TO WEAR ;D

Shipping
> I go to the post office twice a week, usually on Mondays and Thursdays. If I am unable to ship by the "expected to ship" date provided, I will certainly let you know why!

> I COMBINE SHIPPING! Many smaller items (patches, wraps, etc...) will ship free with larger items. Etsy will automatically combine shipping costs - add items to your shopping cart to see the combined rate!

> I ship either USPS First Class ($2.75-$4.75) or Priority Mail ($5.75 and up). Both options include tracking numbers! Priority includes insurance and is faster.

> Please message me **BEFORE** purchasing an item if you are interested in a shipping upgrade, or if you'd like cheaper shipping - some patches can be shipped in letter envelopes without tracking for $1.

> Once your package is in transit, I will send a shipping notification e-mail via Etsy. Please reference this e-mail for a tracking number and care instructions!

> I will refund unused shipping money, should I overcharge you! Some shipping money goes towards packing supplies (mostly tape) and gasoline.

> Finally, I use almost exclusively upcycled packaging! I repurpose envelopes, boxes, scrap paper for labels, bits of string, fabric pieces, whatever I can get my hands on. Hooray!!!
Refunds and Exchanges
If you are unhappy with your purchase, please contact me and we will figure something out, whether it be an exchange or a refund!

The post office is quite reliable in my experience! That being said, I am not responsible for lost or stolen packages :/

I recommended comparing the measurements I list in item descriptions to either (1) the measurements of an article of clothing that fits you well or (2) your own body measurements! Measuring tape highly recommend; googling "how to find my body measurements" can't hurt either. I actually keep a list of my own measurements on hand for buying clothes online or goin' thriftin' :D

I believe a person should be able to wear whatever clothing he/she/they please!! I realize much of the clothing in my shop is sorted into Etsy's "Women's clothing" category; this is to help buyers find my products in Etsy's search engine. I am sorry if this makes anyone feel left out! If you would like more information regarding how a product might fit your specific body, please message me :D

There are cats AND dogs (...and parrots and a snake) living in my house! I generally keep them out of my room and away from my crafts but cannot protect your order against every stray hair. I apologize for this; please message me if you need more info!

? S M O K E / S C E N T S ?
My house is free of smokers and I only use Dr. Bronner's Sal Suds as detergent 'cause I got sensitive skin - it is gentle & free of synthetic fragrances!

I DO often burn incense and wear patchouli perfume oil that could transfer to items when I handle them! If you are sensitive to smells and have questions feel free to message me :)

? C A R E I N S T R U C T I O N S ?
I usually send any special care instructions in my shipping notification e-mail! For handmade items, it is generally best to hand wash each item individually in cold water, using a bit of mild soap if necessary. Rinse cold, gently squeeze out excess moisture and then hang or lay flat on a towel to dry.
