Proud to be sheepish.
Sheepish - not ashamed or embarrassed, but of, or owned by, sheep.
(see the excellent book "Sheepish" by Catherine Friend)
Hi there. My name is Margarete, and I am a knitter, spinner, weaver and dyer currently based in Brooklyn, NYC. Blackbird Fibers was started many years ago while I was living in Edinburgh, Scotland, as a way to explore and celebrate all the sheepy goodness that country has to offer. I took my little shop with me to England and now back to the USA, where I am originally from.
I love to travel and have been lucky enough to live overseas several times. My experiences of other places, and in Britain particularly, inform my work to a great degree. I am delighted to be able to bring my take on artisan dyeing to Etsy buyers!
All my listings are one-of-a-kind and hand dyed by me using the highest quality wash- and light-fast dyes on the market.
BBF is now on Facebook and Twitter, under username 'Blackbird Fibres.' Ravelers - you can find me on Ravelry as GreenMaggie.
A note: The sheep in my bio picture is a sweet Texel x Ryeland cross ram named Spot who lives on a farm in rural Dorset, UK. I first met Spot in August 2009 when visiting a spinner and dyer friend who owns (or rather, is owned by) Spot, a small flock of his relatives, and a few chickens.

Everything I sell is made by me, here in Brooklyn, in my studio/living room. I dye using high quality wash-fast and light-fast dyes in a combination of immersion and painting techniques. All my fibers and yarns are dyed in small lots. Colourways are almost always one-of-a-kind and may not be repeated. If you see something you love, grab it! Even if I have more of the base I may not be able to reproduce that exact listing.
I am proud of my work and stand behind my products should you have any questions or after-purchase queries.
----------------------------------
Please note that, due to the natural variation between skeins - even between those coming out of the same dye pot - it is best to alternate skeins every few rows if using multiple skeins in a project.
All yarns and fibres should be washed carefully by hand in cold water with a gentle detergent. I dye carefully and to exhaustion, and rinse several times, but some dye pigments are simply less wash-fast than others. On the off chance there is some dye residue left please do wash colours separately, and please also be aware that dark or intense colours may transfer onto light fabrics.
----------------------------------
I take every care to describe and photograph my yarn accurately - but your monitor may show colours different to mine. If in doubt, please contact me.
----------------------------------
Thanks for having a look around! If you have any questions do not hesitate to get in touch.

Shipping
USA:
All parcels within the USA are shipped USPS First Class and should reach you within three to seven days.
INTERNATIONAL:
Buyers are responsible for any and all duties and customs charges that may be incurred.
All overseas parcels are shipped within one to two days and should arrive after about a week, but sometimes it can take up to a month - or longer! Please keep in mind that shipping this way does NOT include tracking and insurance. You can of course have your parcel insured, or shipped by priority mail or courier - however, tracking and insurance are considerably more expensive. If you'd like this option, just let me know and I will send you an invoice through PayPal for the extra postage.
Additional policies and FAQs
All my fibres are stored, dyed and dried in a pet-free, smoke-free environment. I use low-fragrance or no-fragrance detergents to wash the fibre and yarn and I do not use chemical moth-proofing in my home, or lavender sachets. I do use cedar to deter pests but the cedar does not generally come into direct contact with the wool.
