About

Back to the inky stinky basics of carving, printing and painting.

I’m Catrìona Black, and I love making prints. For many years I created animation and illustration with my graphics tablet and computer, always trying to make them look handmade. Recently, with my dreaded 40th birthday on the horizon, I resolved my existential crisis: instead of designing things that pretend to be handmade, from now on I would actually hand make them.

So, I have found my way back to beautiful, messy basics. I love the ink under my fingernails and the whiff of turps in the air. I’ve a little corner in my garden shed to call my own, and there I make what takes my fancy.

Having moved to the Netherlands three years ago, I draw inspiration from the Dutch places and stories around me. But my fundamental driving force will always be my own Scottish Gaelic heritage. I love to listen to Radio nan Gaidheal while I work, and one of my projects is an illustrated pocket book of weird and wonderful Gaelic words.

I spend many happy hours working in my shed, and I hope you like the results. My prints are all individually hand-printed and hand-painted, so for a great price you can hang a real artist’s original on your wall.

Shop policies

Last updated on January 4, 2018
All the prints in this shop are made by hand in my garden shed, and each one is unique - I carve the design into lino, print it with my etching press, and where applicable, I paint in the colour with vivid acrylic ink.

Your print is therefore one of a kind, and may vary slightly from that shown. If you would like to see your specific print before purchase, I would be happy to e-mail you an image.

I take great care to ensure that my prints will last for a long time. I use only acid-free paper, printed with eco-friendly but completely permanent Caligo relief ink, and coloured with permanent acrylic inks. Each original print is signed along with its limited edition number.

I package and send all prints with great care to ensure that they arrive in immaculate condition. All prints are now sent tracked with DHL.

All images are copyright Black Prints. Copyright is non-transferable with purchase.

If you are unhappy with your purchase, please contact me and let me know the problem. I want all my customers to be happy customers and will do whatever I can to make sure you are too.
Payment
My preferred payment options are Paypal and credit card. You may also pay with bank deposit, but I will wait for payment to clear before shipping the item. If payment doesn’t come through I will contact you to let you know. If I don't get a reply after two weeks, the order will be cancelled. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to send me a message.
Shipping
I use DHL to send all original prints, with tracking in most countries. I try to send them within two working days of payment, and will send you a dispatch notice with the tracking number when they're on their way. From that point, delivery times are variable, but as a rule of thumb, it should take a day within the Netherlands, and around a week to the rest of Europe. Outside Europe it's roughly 1 to 2 weeks, although there can occasionally be customs delays. Let me know if you have any special delivery requirements such as gift wrapping or the inclusion of a personal message.
Additional policies and FAQs
I am very happy to discuss special commissions, whether for a one-off print or for a bulk order. Unlike many artists who make precise copies of photographs, I love improvising from "imperfect" snapshots to produce the perfect result. Prices start at €190.00 for a custom print.
