Blackstrap is rooted in a do-it-yourself approach to living. An origin on the Saskatchewan prairie planted the seed of self-sufficiency and grew into a passion for making useful household items that celebrate both form and function.

Originally established by Diane Janzen in 2017. Her son Jon directs the Blackstrap’s brand identity and contributes to product development. Jon’s wife, Berçin, holds the reins on social media and product photography.

Blackstrap is certainly a team effort, but Diane is firmly at the helm—from concept to completion—she crafts every product Blackstrap has to offer.

Mud Cloth is cotton fabric handwoven and dyed in Mali, West Africa. The Bogolan technique, meaning "made from mud" in Bambara (the national language in Mali) is completely organic and sustainable. Dye is traditionally made with fermented mud: a mixture of roots, leaves, tree barks and wild grapes. African artisans hand-dye symbols into the cotton as a way of telling stories of their villages and to share African proverbs. No two pieces of Mud Cloth are the same: the patterns vary from one unique piece to another.
