This was a custom order and I could not have been happier with the final results. Working with Jessica was a breeze and her creativity and attention to detail were greatly appreciated.

About

Welcome to my world! I’m Jessica Stadtmueller, and I am the artist behind Blackwood Cottage.

One of my favorite questions is, “Where is this Blackwood Cottage?”

It usually makes me chuckle. Blackwood Cottage is not a company, gallery, or a bed and breakfast. Heck, it’s not even a cottage.

Blackwood Cottage exists around me and inside me. It’s my world. I see it during nature walks, discovering mushrooms and moss. I imagine it when I read Grimm’s Fairy Tales or ghost stories. I feel it when I hand stitch vintage lace onto a doll.

If you would have told me years ago I’d eventually be making dolls, I would have been pretty confused. I have a B.F.A. in Studio Art from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, with a major in printmaking and a minor in ceramics. Doll-making was not in the cards.

It was an unexpected Christmas gift in 2002 that changed my creative focus: a sewing machine. I quickly found that making garments frustrated me. So, I began to use my sewing machine as a creative tool …and started making dolls.

Creating dolls makes me feel more grounded and rooted. It has blended my creative needs and interests into one and reconnects with that kid inside. It’s easy to forget who we were as children, until we pick up a doll. We all deserve to nurture that inner sense of wonder and magic. And that’s what I want for you.

I would love for you to browse my studio and watch my dolls and softies come to life. I actively post in-progress photos on instagram and facebook. I love to interact through social media, and I follow back! You can also check into my blog on www.blackwoodcottage.com

Thank you so much for taking the time to learn more about my work and visiting my Etsy shop! Looking forward to seeing you online or at my next event! – Jessica

Welcome to Blackwood Cottage where you will find my one of a kind dolls and odd, charming creatures.
I take my flat pencil sketches and breathe life into them with fabric, fiber, stuffing, paint, and thread. I love seeing my ideas progress from simple doodles to tactile objects you can hold and cherish!
