About

Blanka + handicraft = BlanCraft

My name is Blanka Bakowicz and I am a feltmaker and designer living in Poland. I run my own felting studio, called BlanCraft. Its name is a combination of my name and the word handicraft.

Why did I choose this way of life? I was always a creative person and loved to express myself in various art techniques. For this reason I attended lots of art classes, workshops and handicraft courses. At the beginning it was just a hobby and a nice way to relieve stress and fight with daily routine. But in 2009, I participated in felting classes. I loved this technique! It was just like sculpting, but in wool instead of clay. Especially, I enjoyed the fact that I was able to turn fibers into something entirely new. Since then, I was sure this was what I wanted to do.

Today I make my dream come true, although sometimes I feel like a Don Quixote in a clash with large companies and mass production. What makes me go forward is hope that - from time to time - I help a few little dreams of yours to come true as well.

If you like what I do, I invite you to my artistic store. You can also subscribe to my newsletter with the following link: http://eepurl.com/b-a0mL

I hope we will stay in touch :)

With smiles,
Blanka Bakowicz from BlanCraft

Frequently asked questions
Which materials do I use to create my products?

Although my products are made of felt, I do not use machine-made felt sheets. I am a feltmaker, which means that I create felt by myself using superfine merino wool. This is like sculpting in pure wool. To make my works even more unique and precious, I add natural silk. Materials I use come from animals that do not sweat nor freeze. It makes my products thermoactive and versatile.

How does my creative process look like?

Do you know these cheerful people with dreads on their heads? Dreadlocks are just matted ropes of hair and I make them all the time, as felt is a matted sheep fleece. When I have an idea of a product, I take wool fibers out of my boxes and, little by little, put them on the rough surface. I arrange colors and patterns in the right order, adding pieces of silk and other decorations here and there. When I finish, it all looks like a bunch of hair on the table.

Then I turn it into felt. I pour the wool with soapy water, which softens fibers. I cover them with bubble wrap and rub them with hands. Rough surfaces and rubbing make fibers more and more matted, turning wool into felt. At last I fine-tune the product applying additional techniques.

How do I come up with the ideas for my products?

When I design, I usually focus on one topic and imagine what my customers might need. Then I make it in my own way. The first thing is to choose colors for my new product. Sometimes I start from making a drawing in my notebook, but usually I stand in front of shelves in my studio, look at the wool and try to match its colors with other materials. Piece by piece an image of the item emerges in my mind.

Which styles do I like the most?

My style is very diverse. On the one hand, I create romantic and sophisticated accessories for women, who love boho trends. On the other hand, I design simple, ascetic jewelry and items in ethnic or tribal style. I do not restrict my imagination and follow tastes of my customers. Their satisfaction is what makes me feel most fulfilled.

Who are my customers?

This is the question I often ask to myself and can not fully answer. I know about you only as much as you wish to share with me, but you are the most wonderful and hearty people I met online. You are women and men of many nationalities, professions and languages who value naturalness, uniqueness and comfort. I love to see your smiling faces on my social media, read your friendly reviews in my shops and share with you my new products through newsletters.
