I absolutely love it!!!!! Using it for matches, but it would be adorable with a succulent in it.

You will make a boy that has been sad and angry for a very long time- very happy. Even if for a little while. It is still longer than never. You have given him hope which is much better than the alternative. Thank you.

Let me preface this by saying that this review is a week overdue- but not because life has been too busy or because I've been too lazy-but because I wanted to make sure that what I wrote was at least somewhat decent and not some half arsed attempt at saying thank you. I bought these cards & another for a special nephew of mine (who is going through a trying time) & I asked blind bicyclist if they could please include something a little extra for him. They said they would try & that it would be "small". I said, "no problem, anything will do" & thanked them. What I got for my nephew was far from small. It was gigantic- not in stature mind you, but in size & weight of meaning & significance. My heart practically stopped. So, bb, my words- they are not good enough, nor true enough to express how I really feel. All I can say is this;

About

A little concrete shop in Iowa on ETSY.

Well.. an Etsy shop was not even on my radar and somehow, here it is. It seems many things conspired to bring me to this online world.

This is my concrete honey bear manifesto.

The concrete inadvertently started. My Gran left me some simple concrete 'keepsakes' her neighbor made...folk art essentially. A bright red cardinal, mushroom, and collie dog.
These items are a strong physical and visual reminder of my childhood days visiting her house. I feel lucky to have them.
In 2008 Cedar Rapids experienced an Epic Flood and her house was lost. On occasion, I still drive through the Czech Village (chasing ghosts I suppose) trying to imagine the house and yard where these items held there own. They are my inspiration.

I actually started pouring concrete to make repairs to the concrete mushroom. And some how, from there things just started happening. I became slightly enamored; of-by-with-and for this ubiquitous material, concrete and shapes to pour it in. Hence honey bears and flowers. The concrete flowers© are a little more complicated to explain. Things on the work bench that conspired and my hands just happened to be there.
When whimsy strikes me.. I think of building a honey bear empire. (Think Terra Cotta Warriors) Stranger things have happened. Mood rings and pet rocks.. why not concrete honey bears? So, I keep on striving for my Seed Savers- mortgage lifter moment!

OK- so heres the thing, I make these honey bears 1-4 at a time, from containers friends and family save for me. I work out of concrete bags 50-90lbs.
I reuse the containers as many times as possible, and try to come up with ways to make them useful ie: striker bears, solar bears, recipe card, and Janus bears©. The bears started out as bud vases, incense holders, bottle rocket launchers, paper weights... and can still be used as such.
The concrete bears are all unique!

A little more if you are so inclined...
I introduced the bears in June of 2006, at a solo show. From: the enumerative gardens of misshapen identity and ideas. Titled as such, because the creative process can be very misshapen to me - things do not always come to us with truest identity -or as a pure idea or process, they seed, grow and need tending to.
Ok so, that's about it. You know most of what makes this shop tick.

till then..
blindbicyclist cards+concrete thanks you.

I love the concrete, cool and grey, ubiquitous concrete, speckled aggregate, ever curing for strength and yet, vulnerable to nature and time just like us all.

    Inspiration

I added a place to my shop personnel section. I hope this is legit. As I wandered a very HOT Wisconsin last summer- I made an accidental pilgrimage to Grandview. It was totally unexpected and awesome. Cheers! to people we have never met- but find.
