Starting Something "Small"

My first love of designing with fabric is quilts! I adore the process of creating a functional yet artful item for the home and body. For me, quilts are iconic symbols of warmth, love, and community. As a young girl, I sat many hours with my grandma while she handquilted blocks for the quilts that eventually went on mine and my sister's beds. After the birth of my first daughter, some maternal instict drew me to creating my own first quilt that could provide her with an extra dose of handmade love and warmth. In the years that followed I discovered a deep passion for "the quilt". While my process and asthetic is quite different from my lovely grandma's, the integrity of the finished product remains intact.

Since that first quilt some 7 or so years ago, I have sewn like a "fiend" every chance I have gotten. I have designed and created many Modern Quilts and Wall Hanging Pieces, helped found my Local Modern Quilt Guild here Santa Barbra and started my Blooming Poppies Modern Designs Blog. My quilts have been in juried Modern Quilt Shows that have traveled internationally. I was delighted to recieve top honors for one of my quilts at the First Annual Quilt Con Show in Austin, Texas in 2013. I have made many a dress, shirt, dolly blanky, you name it for my three daughters. I have sewn bags, aprons, hot pads, pillow covers, etc. for friends and family. And loved every minute of it! I simply love fabric, color, design and handcrafting! The integrity and "soul" of a handmade item that is pretty and/or artistically interesting goes a long way for me. I appreciate simplicity in design and gravitate toward items that are functional and durable.

My design aesthetic is very eclectic, yet modern! Often I will combine sophisticated with playful or modern with vintage. I enjoy working with a wide variety of materials, from a very clean and modern linen, to the most whimsical and fun Japanese import and locally screenprinted vintage remnants. Since moving, with our three young daughters, to our very small (1030 sq ft), and cozy cottage by the beach, in February of this year, and having to give up my dedicated sewing studio space, I have adapted to working in the corner of our family living room and thus, have adopted a more minimal approach to my work. I have always appreciated simplicity in design, but now I am forced to be more mindful about my fabric choices and use what I have more wisely. I have moved away from creating large quilts with my design wall, in lieu of smaller items like pouches, hot pads, knitting bags, qullted pillow covers, etc. My creations are all unique and one of a kind as I often use rare remnants, I don't generally buy yardage of any one material and I am always on the lookout for fabric that I can reuse- "upcycle" if you will.

As a busy mom of three, I work hard to find time to sew and while I initially opened my shop in 2011, it was not until just recently (now that they are all in school full-time) that I decided to make my craft and my shop a "higher priority" in my life.
I strive to create for you, items that are infused with integrity, handmade goodness and are durable, functional and artful. I'm happy you have visited my shop. Please feel free to look around and check back often as I am continually coming up with new designs and items for you.
