Questions and Answers that describe Bluebirdheaven

How did your shop get started?

In the Spring of 2008, my aunt and I attended a Country Living entrepreneurs workshop in Chicago. I learned all about Etsy and came home eager to begin... so I started the shop.
I did it part time for the first two years, but once my son was born, I began to get more serious about my etsy shop. I dedicated A LOT of time to promoting and perfecting my shop. In August 2010, I was able to quit my architecture job and work full time at Bluebirdheaven while staying home with my son. People often ask if I miss the architecture field... I am still vigilant about the environment and consider the importance of function in every design, the only real difference is that my current designs are on a different scale.

What does a typical day look like for you? How do you organize your time and tasks?

I usually spend all morning packaging and finishing orders. It is a rush and challenge to see how many packages I can get ready before fedex comes to pick them up anywhere from 12 to 3pm. The rest of the afternoon I work on the next days orders. At night, after my son is asleep, I work on shipping labels, other computer work, and more orders.
I haven't mastered the organization part yet, but it's always a goal! At least I know my jewelry is organized!

Where did your shop name come from?

Well I started making birdhouses, so that is where the bluebird came from. Also... I have a wonderful old antique painting of a child looking at some bluebirds that is titled "blue heaven". We combined the two to make our name. It has evolved into the jewelry displays, but I hope to add some new items from my FULL sketch book.

What kind of things make you the happiest?

Using my hands to create, hot coffee in the morning, and fresh vegetables from my garden. And of course spending time with my children, Levi and Layla!

What do you do when faced with a 'creative block'?

I just make... trial and error. Even when what I make isn't perfect or even usable... it helps me push through and I discover and learn from ALL of my creations.

What is your favorite quote?

When you do the common things in life in an uncommon way, you will command the attention of the world.
- George Washington Carver

P.S. - My son just learned to color, so if your shipping box has abstract markings on it, you're lucky enough to receive a piece of his first, original artwork! :)
