Announcement   Welcome to Blue-Faced Crone Apothecary. The Etsy shop is new as of October 1, 2016 but the brand was established in 2013. I created a fantastic product before, but I have greatly improved all of my formulas to be even more moisturizing and nourishing to the skin. You will find 10 delicious varieties of hand-crafted artisanal natural soaps and an expanding variety of Fizzing Elixir Bath Bombs, and balms for aches, pains, dry skin and beard taming, also hand-crafted, artisanal and all natural. I use ingredients of the highest level of quality that I can possibly procure with which to create every batch of handcrafted soap, bath bombs, balms and elixirs. Always palm free, cruelty free, alcohol free, SLS/SLA Free, phthalate free and with the exception of Goat's Milk Orange soap, vegan. I don't use harmful synthetic chemicals in any of my products. I use only the highest quality Essential Oils, never synthetic fragrance oils. All colorants are mineral tints, oxides and bamboo charcoal. I am absolutely thrilled to have you here, and I hope you have a chance to peruse all the items I’ve handmade just for you.

I have been crafting cold process soap for twenty years. I am legally blind, so everything I do online takes a little longer than a fully sighted person, but I am working as quickly as I can to take care of you.  Thank you for your understanding and patience.

*If you are local to me and plan to pick up your order, please use the coupon code BFCPICKUPNOSHIP to waive your shipping fees. If you forget, I will gladly refund all of your shipping fees at my earliest convenience.

***Please see the FAQ titled "Shipping - PLEASE READ" for shipping information about your order!

I will happily refund the shipping cost balance if you are overcharged for shipping, which you likely will be. It seems soap, bath bombs and balms are oddly shaped items and Etsy can't quite get a bead on how to charge for shipping. I am a pro at refunding shipping balances and shipping at a more economical rate than Etsy chooses in checkout. If I can possibly save you any money on shipping without compromising the contents and integrity of your order, I will do so! You will be notified via Etsy conversations of any balance due prior to shipping.

About

Artisanal Soap, hand-crafted, in small batches, always. Because it's just better.

My grandmother used to tell about how when my dad was a little boy, he wouldn’t so much play with his toys as he would take them apart just to see if he could put them back together again. Everything. From his toys to a transistor radio, he disassembled all of it. Just out of curiosity and tenacity. Sometimes he got it all back together, sometimes not quite. That is probably where my love of making things from scratch comes from. I have always been fascinated by the way things were made, from ordinary things to extraordinary things. I made croissants from scratch for the first time just before my 45th birthday and it was like climbing Mt. Everest. I was terrified to attempt them and put them off for a couple of years, then when I finally did it, I realized something very important: I could do it. What had I been waiting for?

For me, soap crafting is an absolutely magical process in which these three things, fats, water and alkali (sodium hydroxide, which is lye) are combined at just the right moment and they all join together to turn into something else, one amazing, different thing. Something no longer oily, no longer caustic. Something wonderful: Soap.

I started making soap in my mid-twenties (very long ago) after a long battle with the fear that lye would be what finally killed me. Safety precautions were taken; well, over-done, actually. I was wearing giant goggles, elbow length rubber gloves taped to long sleeves of a chambray shirt and a trash bag with arm holes and a hole for my head. Turns out, all of that wasn’t exactly as necessary as I’d imagined it would be. The resulting soap wasn’t that pretty, and I don’t remember what it smelled like, but I had done it. I had made soap. From scratch. This was my sacred alchemy. I might as well have turned lead into gold. After that I needed to figure out how to do it right, so off on a soap crafting adventure I would go.

Blue-Faced Crone Apothecary was established in 2013. I hand-craft artisanal soap in small, 14 pound batches and I derive such immense pleasure from the entire process. There is something so thrilling about peeking into the mould (you’re not supposed to but I think secretly all soap crafters do) to see how it’s coming along. Something so completely wonderful about taking the finished soap out of it’s mould, carefully peeling back the paper and revealing this amazing thing you’ve created. The aroma of the soap itself, underneath the scent of essential oils… The texture of the soap, silken and maybe a little tacky, and the way the light comes through it on the corners; that beautiful, magical translucent glow. It is truly a passion that feeds my soul. It is definitely an art form in which there are as many kinds of soap as there are soap crafters. But there has to be love for the process. And that love absolutely finds its way into the final product. Saying that I lovingly hand craft each small batch is not just wind; it’s true. I love each and every bar of artisanal soap that comes out of my Apothecary. I absolutely, truly hope that you do as well.

My handcrafted soap is just that - hand crafted. Every batch was made by only me. Every bar is hand crafted, hand cut, hand stamped, wrapped and labelled by me. Sometimes a bar of soap might have been cut at a bit of an angle or a label was put on a bit wonky. But it was done by a human being, and that human being is me. And sometimes the simplest tasks are quite a bit harder for me to do because I'm legally blind. But my soap is made with passion, from way down in my soul.

Thank you for coming here to Blue-Faced Crone, no matter how or why you landed here. I hope you find something that is to your liking. I would love to hear your feedback after a purchase. Spread the word if you like what you see, and if you love what you buy.

I am an Aries, so things have to be just right. I'm not a control freak, I'm particular. Persnickety. When I'm not making soap, I am spinning yarn on my Spinning Wheel, Frigg, or baking something like bread or pastry. I like to challenge myself, and making things from scratch is always a challenge. Soap crafting is something I am the most passionate about, and I hope you like what I have made.

Do you use lye in your soap?

Yes. If there's no lye, there's no soap. But fortunately, when soap is made correctly, the lye - as well as all the oils and water - go through an exothermic chemical reaction called saponification, which transforms the lye molecules (and again, the oil and water molecules) into actual soap molecules. The lye is neutralized and it is extremely gentle and mild. The oils continue to moisturize, make lather and get you clean, thanks to the lye's contribution. But it's no longer anything at all to worry about. Every batch of Cold Process artisanal soap that is hand crafted in my Apothecary is cured for a minimum of 6 weeks to ensure you receive a gentle, mild, skin-nourishing, long lasting bar of the highest quality soap.

What is Cold Process?

Cold Process is one method of soap making. Cold Process (CP) does not utilize cooking the soap to neutralize the lye like Hot Process (HP) does. In my experience, most soap makers are one or the other, CP or HP. I am just about 100% CP. It's just my preference. I also allow my soap to cure for a minimum of 6 weeks. (See above "Do you use lye in your soap?")

How can I make my soap last longer?

Allow your soap to air dry after each use, preferably on a slatted soap dish with adequate drainage. Don't allow your soap to sit in water or where water will drip or run over it - this will dissolve the soap. Soap doesn't last forever, but with proper care it can last for many, many uses!

What's the difference between your soap and, say, grocery store soap?

Commercial soaps are not really soap any longer by the time they reach the consumer; they're detergents. Commercial soap contains little to no glycerin any longer, as it has been stripped to sell aftermarket. Glycerin is a natural byproduct of the soap making process and is a natural humectant - meaning it draws moisture. Commercial soaps can also contain parabens, Sodium Laurel/Laureth Sulfates, alcohol, phthalates, and are often tested on animals. In most cases, my soaps are vegan, and they are always SLS Free, paraben free, petroleum free, alcohol free and absolutely cruelty free. I also don't use palm oil in my soap. Save the rainforest, save the orangutans! I've been testing my soap on myself for almost 20 years.

Your profile says you're blind. Is that true?

It is! I am legally blind, but not profoundly blind. I can see light very well, as well as vivid color. I can't see definition. I can, however, use some cool gadgets to help me get along and continue to do things like make soap. Fortunately, I had been making soap for about 15 years before I lost my vision; it wasn't something I had to learn from scratch. I just had to learn how to adapt my knowledge safely to accommodate my blindness. I also have an amazing support system of friends and my fiancée, who is wonderful and helps me with anything I need help with. And I exercise extreme caution and safety when working with lye, of course! I've had lots of years to practice that safety and caution and exercise it religiously.

Do you use natural Essential Oils to scent your soap?

Yes! I use only the highest quality essential oils I can find to scent my soap. Often times, the most expensive ingredient in a bar of soap is the essential oil used to scent it. The essential oil market fluctuates wildly as well; a pound of lavender essential oil might go up in price by about $40 from one month to the next. It's very unpredictable. But yes - all essential oils. I made a soap called Endless Summer that utilized Nature-Identical Fragrance Oils, but I no longer make it. It has been discontinued. It is a wonderful soap! I just wanted to keep things consistent across the board with all of my products.

Custom and personalized orders

I will gladly entertain a custom order. Custom orders start at small 1 -2 pound batches and go to 14 pound batches or more. Please use the "Request a Custom Order" button and we'll hammer out the details in a custom listing.

Do you take checks or money orders?

I do not take personal checks. Cashier's checks, yes, and money orders, yes. But no, no personal checks. If paying with a cashier's check or money order, your order will be shipped after the check is received via the mail.
