About

Creating illustration to enliven the world.

I grew up in a small town in Massachusetts and studied illustration at Massachusetts College of Art. I moved to San Francisco in 1995 and have been working to make my illustration dream happen.

I started bluehour studio in 2010, and opened up my Etsy shop in late 2011. I've always been inspired by history and story telling. I have a deep love for everything vintage and Victorian. I love learning about different histories and people. As a kid, my favorite dream was to have a time machine, in which I could pop into different worlds, meet people and look around. Now my paintings allow me to do that.

As for the artwork itself, my work is pretty old-school. Each new illustration is created by first making a graphite drawing and then painting it with layers of watercolor and gouache. I keep adding new layers until it looks right and my characters seem to come to life.

Each painting is then carefully scanned and resized and then printed out on my fancy Epson printer. Each of these limited edition prints are then titled, numbered and signed and waiting for you.

I hope you enjoy what I do!

Frequently asked questions

How do custom portraits work?

How it works: Send me an email to get the conversation started and ideas flowing. You will need a good photo reference or two of your subject. Next, I will start on the sketches, send these to you and make changes if needed. When everything is Ok, I I will start on the finished piece. When all is done, I send the illustration off in mail to you.

Each piece will be created on illustration board and painted with watercolor and gouache paints.

Sound fun? Let's start a conversation...

Each portrait will take approximately 3 to 4 weeks from start to finish. Very complex pieces may take a bit longer.
