A mother from Devon exploring her creativity with fiber arts

Ever since I was a small child I have been creative, spending most of my free time drawing, painting and sewing. I spent my childhood surrounded by artistic women who still inspire me to this very day.

I started my family young and found fitting in time to be creative around the responsibilities of motherhood challenging at first but little by little I found more time and motivation.

Last year, on a whim, I started embroidering flowers and fell in love with the calmness of embroidery. My mum taught me to sew when I was small but had mostly used it for practical reasons in my adult life so being able to create something beautiful was incredible.

I grew up in rural Devon and have fond memories of summers spent walking along country lanes picking wildflowers to tie into a posy. I feel happiest in the warmer months when everything is alive with colour so it felt perfect to capture this in thread so that the colours of the flowers can be kept alive in your home all year round.

One of the inspiring women I spoke about earlier was the mother of my childhood friend who was a fiber artist. I remember going to play in their bungalow and being awed by the amazing weavings that she had made and displayed on her walls and her loom that was so big it filled a room.

My textiles teacher taught me how to make and weave on a cardboard loom when I was a teenager and I dabbled in the art on and off. I felt inspired to start again and expand my knowledge of weaving techniques when I discovered some amazing fiber artists on Instagram and Pinterest.

I am enjoying the process of experimenting with different weaving styles and materials and soon would like to combine my love of weaving and embroidery.
