Fashionable utility accessories
Katherine the Great began designing costumes in 1995 while still in high school, inspired by the lack of interesting clothing and costumes in her sizable size. She has brought that same commitment to beautiful clothes that fit well to her unique accessory business Blue Moon Designs.
Graduating from the University of California, Davis with a degree in Costume and Textile design in 2000, she began Blue Moon Designs first as a custom costuming business. She spent several years entranced by many different activities involving costumes -- bellydancing, Renaissance Faire, and Burning Man -- all the while developing a historical design sensibility ... with a twist.
After falling in love with the steampunk Victorian house-on-wheels art car at Burning Man called the Neverwas Haul, Katherine designed her first fancy pocketed utility belt, and has shifted the focus of Blue Moon Designs to fancy utility accessories, many of which involve LED lights and other interesting hardware. As the Librarian and Quartermaster of the Neverwas Haul's Traveling Academy of Unnatural Science, she and her husband Dr. Prof. Samuel Tweed now provide rapid-deployment tea and cocktail service to the thirsty masses via such contraptions as the Tea Engine robotic tea service and the Executaire backpack bar. She is also sometimes known as Black Rock Ranger Librarian.
In addition to designing accessories, Katherine also works a reference librarian at academic libraries around the Bay Area. But that's another story...
Above all, she is committed to promoting universal body positivity through fabulous fancy accessories!
Katherine's "Love Letter to Hips"
"This letter is addressed to every woman who’s ever despaired that her hips are too big, unattractive, or otherwise shaped wrong.
My dear, you really have no idea how lovely your curvaceous curves are! Like a blushing ripe apple, ready for someone to take a crisp bite. Yum!
Your hips are an extension of your root, the axis of your body’s strength and power.
They are a sign and symbol of your femininity and allure, setting your lover’s heart aflame with just a shimmy and a twist.
Why do you suppose women throughout history have endured boning, strapping, lacing, and such other forms of architecture? Why, to get the hip curve that you were born with!
Trust me, in my line of work, I’ve seen a lot of hips. And they are all gorgeous! Just as gorgeous as yours.
Hips are who we are and how we’re built. They are a sign of health and strength. Never believe that your hips aren’t just perfect -- because they are.
Katherine the Great"

Please make sure that you check your measurements before ordering. My sizes are unconventionally generous, so it's better to order a size smaller than you think you are. When in doubt, double check and/or convo me. I want your purchases to fit without the need for alterations!
I stand by the quality of my work, so if an item fails to meet your expectations in terms of construction or durability, please let me know so I can make it right. I am happy to take care of reasonable repairs (re-stitching, repairing grommets and snaps, etc.) for up to two years from the date of purchase.
Accepted payment methods
- Accepts Etsy gift cards
In-person Pickup: I am happy to arrange for in-person pickup of purchased items from my studio if you live in or near Oakland -- just send me a convo before or after purchase, and I will refund your shipping amount after you have picked up your item.
Shipping times: Unless otherwise noted, all items in my shop are already made and ready to ship immediately. I am almost always able to ship within one or two days of a customer's ordering it -- in cases where shipment has to be delayed, I will be sure to let you know.
Forwarding / Undeliverable Packages: Please make sure your address is updated and correct before completing the checkout process! I will not be held responsible for delays or extra shipping charges incurred due packages that the USPS considers undeliverable because you have moved and not updated your shipping address with Etsy.
Duties: For my international customers, please note that you may have to pay additional duties once your item reaches your country. These duties are the responsibility of the buyer, so please make sure that you inform yourself about your country's laws about duties on international purchases before buying. I will not falsify customs documents, label your purchase as a gift, or declare a lower item value on customs forms -- any of these actions are fraudulent and are against the law, so please do not ask me to do so.
Tracking for International Orders: Please be aware that the listed shipping price for Pocket Belts, Light-up Clips, and Light-up Pins does *NOT* include a tracking number. However, tracking numbers ARE included for Pocket Belt & Bustles, as well as for any combined orders (ie. orders of more than one item). Please let me know if you would like to request a tracking number for your order, and I can adjust the shipping price accordingly.
Refunds and Exchanges
Exchanges: If you wish to exchange an item for something in a different size, I will accept exchanges within 30 days of you receiving the item. Please notify me of your desire to exchange your purchase, and I will send you the mailing address and relevant info. Be advised that I will only exchange the returned item for an item that is currently in stock -- I cannot exchange an item purchased from stock for a custom or made-to-order item. In other words, if you are exchanging a prior purchase, you have to choose from the items currently in my shop for the item you wish to exchange it for -- you cannot ask for an exchange for a made-to-order or custom request.
In the case of either a return or an exchange, the buyer is responsible for the cost of return shipping, and I insist that buyers get delivery confirmation and/or tracking on returned items -- I cannot be held responsible if the post office loses an item on its way back to me.
Unfortunately I cannot offer exchanges or returns on items purchased on sale or clearance.
